Funny. We're able to live quite nicely on 100k.

Maybe some of us just have higher standards.

And that is your biggest problem and will be your downfall

You sound unhinged. The fact that you make unfounded assumptions about a complete stranger shows that you might have bigger problems than PP. Come to think of it, I wonder if you are that crazy, old single lady who makes 100k and started a thread a while ago desperately trying to get other people to say she is rich.

You mean like assuming you have "higher standards" than me??

+ 1 She also made quite assumption an about the "old" single lady in her 50s being "crazy."

Quite nicely? You can't max out on retirement on that, nor can you save for college. Do you mean you have money left over at the end of the month? To me, living "quite nicely" is maxing out two 401(k) plans annually and saving enough to fund four years of state college education for each of my children.

Maybe we can't do all that --- but my point was that you CAN live the middle class lifestyle on 250 (per the PP) -- because we do it on less.

All depends on what you think of as middle class.

It is true that when words have no meaning, you can say anything...

I am not the PP who was talking about their standards, although I do agree with them. Learn to read properly and follow along.

I think you can be middle class and not be maxing out your retirement account. I mean, isn't most of america sort of middle class? And I hear not many have fully funded retirement accounts. unless we're going to lump all those people into "poor" somehow.

But why get angry at dual income couples making 300k who are struggling to buy a house in a nice school district and stupid enough to post on here asking for advice (and instead get told to sit down and STFU because you're RICH) when you could get mad at all the lobbyists and political consultants and contractors making 900k plus?

Here what I hear: "I don't feel rich because I'm trying to buy a freestanding SFH with stainless steel appliances and a yard and granite countertops in a neighborhood where the schools are really good. By good I mean as few FARMS kids as possible. I can't afford that." Those are all wants, not needs.

Hahahah at you thinking people are still looking for stainless steel and granite[/quote

OMFG, My wife and I literally LOLd at this response.
-couple building semi custom house with slate appliances and quartz countertops.

Just want to make 1 point. If the average salary of the top 1% is approx 1.1 mm, that's bc the CEOs and law partners etc who make multiple millions are bringing up the average. The threshold to make more than 99% of others is still probably in the 300k to 400k range. So, if you make 300k you probably make more than 97 or 98% of people nationally and maybe 90% or more of people in the dc nd vs region.

We make $275k, live in NW DC, have a toddler now and a baby on the way, and we definitely feel pretty fortunate. "Rich" is a pretty weird term but we definitely have more money than we need.

We do or very close to that. Enough to retire a couple of years early if desired. State college tuition funded for four years by the time kids are in school. Money for vacations. No car loans. It can be done, but you can't do that and insist on living in NW DC or go on expensive travel.

that's twice as much money as DH and I make combined, and with a mortgage and two kids in daycare, we are not saving very much. If we doubled our income, we would feel rich!

Come to think of it, I wonder if you are that crazy, old single lady who makes 100k and started a thread a while ago desperately trying to get other people to say she is rich.

You mean that woman in her 50s? She wasn't trying to get people to say that $100k is rich. As I recall, she was objecting that people - like you, I assume - kept saying that $100k was poor. Big difference.

That's the same thing, stated another way, in this thread. The only way people convince themselves that $300k is middle class is to insist someone earning $100k is poor. If they acknowledged that someone earning $100k (we are talking singe income, not a couple) is upper middle class, rather than struggling, they'd have to face the fact that they themselves are extremely affluent.

Family of 4 making $88K in Arlington qualifies for subsidized benefits, which means they are a lot closer to "poor" than to "upper middle class".

..... FAMILY OF FOUR is the magical word here. Not Dinks, not one kid, not single. Four kids.

Ding, ding, ding! That's the breakdown here. An individual earning $100,000 is upper-middle class. A family of four is going to get subsidizes.

People are mixing up individual incomes and HHI.

A family of four does not mean four kids. It means two grown ups, two kids.
