How do most Russians feel about Americans adopting
Kids from Russian orphanages?
Do most Russian citizens agree with the US adoption ban?

OP, I am a Jewish American. I was bat mitzvah'd in about 1989, at a time when Russians were not allowed to practice religion, and there was a lot of hatred for Jews in Russia. My temple was part of an organization that matched American jews with Russian jews. I got bat mitzvah'd for a Russian girl. I have her name and that she's from Odessa. Would there be any way to find her?

Are you against the break up of the soviet union? Do you think the baltic nations are entitled to their independence? Was conquering them an injustice and a tragedy or an act of kindness in your eyes?
I mean is that land that Russia is entitled to?

And the siege of Leningrad? Who do you think is to blame? I have heard reports of the evacuation being halted. Do you think history is being taught honestly?

Ohh- careful. OP indicated earlier that she doesn't buy the "not allowed to practice religion, and there was a lot of hatred for Jews in Russia" and says Russian Jews used their Jewey wiles to get preferential treatment in the US when really, no one had any problem with them in the USSR when they weren't being too Jewishly sneaky.

PP, where in Russia was this hatred?
By definition Russia had no religion, everybody was a citizen regardless of nationality. You could sing the national anthem in Russian and be patrionic, but if you sing it in Estonian you are nationalistic.
When Chernobil exploded the 'nationals' from the Baltic states were the ones who were sent to clean it up.
I heard from many sources that Russians are hated. They are the colonialists and oppressors. I suspect the jews pp was talking about were Russian jews, therefore Russians living as minorities where the majoriity are not Russian

There is a Russian whore (green card) mafia/group going on here- quite successful! Funny how in Russia they are old hags (late 20s early 30s) but here have a chance and of course aim for money. Disgusting.

I was wondering that, too (I don't have much of an accent so don't mind discussing it )
I think it's two things. First, the Russian phonetics makes it more difficult to acquire the English phonetics (than, say, for Scandinavians or other Europeans). Second, ESL studies in Russia were extremely poor at the high school level (we are not talking college level) up until recently. Now the situation has improved, and I would expect more advanced English speakers and less heavy accents pretty soon...

non-native speaker here.... i don't think folks realize that a lot of what we all call 'accent' is in fact rhythm of speech rather than pronunciation. For most people, after 10 years submerged in a fast-paced, communication-intensive career in an English-only office, speech articulation and vocabulary eventually align themselves with the norm. What stays, however, is the speed and rhythm of delivery, which are both closely linked to someone's persona, developed in early adolescence. English is a slow-paced language, compared with most other languages. If I grew up speaking a fast Romance language, then chances are I will not take my time to properly form every 'a' for apple and "wh" for 'what'. The effect will be an unsettlingly fast speech, with some of the key sounds mixed up.

So... Foreigners... lean to slow down, even if it feels frustrating! And native speakers, remind yourselves that often the muddled speech is not a sign of lack of English knowledge -- just the sign of an overfull brain looking for a release!

Never thought of this actually... Maybe "rassolnik"? the soup which has meat broth, pearl barley, potatoes, carrots, onions, and - ugh - pickles? I hate it

Growing up with a Russian mother, I think head cheese (think cow brains, pig parts) all glued together with clear jello and then unmolded on a platter OR the pickled beet stuff (canned beets, potatoes, pork and beans, hard boiled eggs, pickles) has to beat Rassolnik.

No. Estonian women are hotter.

How does one contradict another? (many) Russian women are hot, (many) Estonian women are hot, (many) American women are hot.

Personally, I think Ukrainian women have the highest % of attractive women among the f. USSR countries. Never heard anything about Estonian women, but sure many of them are beautiful.
