Do you work for Reid? When Meren was the champion you were ad hominem attacking her now it’s Dunne. Is it possible these people are just right? |
| He is doing a good job breaking down the issue. I am going to write him to support him. |
I am sending this to my board member as an example of what I would like to see… |
The longer winter break was overwhelmingly approved by all constituencies when it was polled several years ago. There is absolutely no point to reducing winter break and extending summer break. |
No, please do not shorten winter break.
Maybe. YK should still be a holiday.
Which ones? |
This is where they’ll struggle to get agreement. A lot of people are arguing for more consistency but the desired length of summer is split. Dunne is citing a lot of “this is how it used to be” figures, but research will show there are more benefits to a shorter summer (and year round school.) |
There is zero parent interest in your round school. Reid wants it, and has been trying to back door into it with this calendar, but there’s clearly no interest and that’s why the backlash. |
Columbus and Veterans for a start. That already appears to be on the table. Presidents’ Day could be a teacher workday. As well, the Wednesday before Thanksgiving. |
And Thanksgiving. It is a grown ups holiday. The kids should be there for Christmas for the photos. It looks good to have them there and I have the day off already, but get them back to school new years say- who wants the kids around for that? I need to recover from the party! |
I’m sorry this bothers you but we don’t need 40 days off. Doubling a couple teacher workdays to Federal holidays/vacation add-ons doesn’t keep kids in class on Thanksgiving, it keeps them in class on random Tuesdays in February. |
| Why can’t we just go back to the calendars we had before 2021? What was so wrong with them? Why did we go messing around with something that was working fine? It’s not like it was that long ago. I agree with Dunne that starting two weeks before Labor Day and not ending any earlier was just kind of quietly forced on us with no explanation. |
Oh, now I get it, you still want your kids home, you just think TEACHERS should be working those days. Yeah, those women should be stuck in the classroom for those long holiday weekends. They should have to travel on thanksgiving while the rest of their families travel the day before. Stick to those ladies! YEAH! |
|
As Dunne points out there are many examples of districts that have good calendars. FCPS could simply adopt one of those. There are some that start after Labor Day and get out in early June with 2 week winter breaks and appropriate fall and spring breaks.
This really isn’t that hard a problem to solve. Reid and the school board just have to pick from a sample of working calendars. |
DP. That has been the point on several FCPS threads recently. Teachers can do their planning and grading on federal holidays. The posters’ argument appears to be that will limit the schedule disruptions. Yes, that’s true. It doesn’t take in teacher morale, which has plummeted because of unreasonable workloads and lack of resources, notably time. But I don’t think these posters see the connection between teacher morale and classroom performance. |
We don’t need 40 days off. Another way to look at it is I want TEACHERS to have a longer summer break to spend with their families. |
