There is no space at Einstein and Blair. |
And yet, every year DCCAPS assigns more students to each. |
They added portables to Einstein. They just have the schools overcrowded. There is a consortium so any kid who wants music/arts or anything else can lottery in. |
this sounds like extracurricular stuff anyway |
The portables are classrooms for academics as they don't have enough space. Music and arts are not extracurricular except things like marching band. Its part of the curriculum and a graduation requirement. |
Simplistic and inaccurate. What about the kids who want music/arts who do not get a lottery spot? What about the cost of relocating Northwood's performing arts program, presuming that would need to temporarily be at Einstein in this scenario (if there weren't facilities at Woodward)? What about existing Einstein use of the necessary facilities? Does that mean even greater overcrowding at those two schools than currently exists? Do they forcibly remove some not in the performing arts at those two to make room? To where? What about the discontinuities to student experience, teaching and administration? Etc. |
All the DCC schools have music, theater and arts. They may not have the same classes or teachers but they all have it. So, they can choose any of the DCC schools to lottery into. Einstein doesn't use the auditorium every single night, so sure they could allow Northwood to borrow it for plays and other things. However, like everything at Einstein, it's a dump and not very big or nice. They don't practice in the auditorium. |
What of current (and currently lotteried rising freshman) Northwood students? What of Northwood's particular program? Stage management can require exclusive use of the auditorium for periods of time. Etc. Again, it just isn't that simple. |
Ridiculous. I've had two Einstein kids and been in the auditorium many times. It's a perfectly fine school auditorium. |
It's not very nice... fine, yes, but nice, no. Its very old, the sound system sucks, and they have folding chairs on the sides for extra seating as it's so small. |
New poster. You are the only one that thinks this. Have you been in other MCPS auditoriums, or other auditoriums period? I had a kid go through Einstein too. They had a great experience. The auditorium is also a dump. |
Everyone knew that they were heading to woodward. If the parents didn't think it through for the current freshman, that's on them. It's why we didn't consider Woodward/Northwood as we knew we couldn't make the commute work. Schools can work together and one do a show a bit earlier and one later. |
This is what I don't get. Everyone knew this was coming, since 2019. If having an auditorium/fields during HS was so central to your plans, why didn't you rank Northwood last so you wouldn't have to deal with all the chaos? School construction projects always take longer than originally estimated. Holding schools are always subpar. Families had a simple way to avoid this. |
I had two kids go from SSIMS to Einstein. SSIMS is a dump. Einstein is fine. |
In 2019 the plan lacked fields but didn't lack an auditorium. It also was supposed to start earlier -- many folks now affected would not have had it on their radar. Folks objected to the lack of fields. Folks were ignored. Maybe because the fields were going to be in place for the permanent residents of Woodward when they moved in. If all the students wanting to avoid Northwood assignment could wave the DCC ranked-choice lottery wand and keep themselves out, that would be one thing. They can't, though. You're basically telling a large number of people, "You didn't get what you wanted from the lottery? Too bad/so sad." And what about those who did want the Northwood performing arts program? Sounds like you'd tell them the same thing. |
