Sidwell Junior - GPA concerns

We are at another big 3 and the party line is "All the colleges know how hard our school is and that no one gets all A's" Our kid took the most rigorous classes and had a similar GPA- bit higher and a 1540 SAT plus good ec's etc etc. Guess what - Rejected early at Ivy. Friend with similar stats rejected at Michigan. I know a dozen examples. Yes alums, athletes and URM are still getting in - but the regular "smart" kids who don't have the 4.0 Plus because our schools don't weight and now we don't have AP's are getting shut out.

Things are changing the colleges want the 4.8's and don't care that our schools don't give out 4.0's easily And our schools are too arrogant to acknowledge it. If this continues to play out with lackluster admissions something will hopefully change. Too Late for my kid.

Your kid would have been rejected whether there was grade deflation or not. You don't get it. The only Big 3 kids the T20 want are hooked kids.

This. Exactly. If you aren't one (or ideally two) of the following: URM/Athlete/VIP/(Number 1 or 2 ranked student in your Big 3)/Major donor (15 M Plus), basically forget it and move on.

I'm still holding out some hope in RD for my 3.85+ kid...but it definitely feels bleak so far.

What is the class rank of 3.85 at Sidwell?

There are too many other factors to be able to assess - EC's, rigor of coursework, etc.

This. Exactly. 3.75 is great and T10 contender depending on your ECs

3.75 will put you in the running at the bottom half of T10

Whoever wrote this is nuts. You think this GPA will make you strong for the bottom of top 10. Getting into Hopkins or Duke with this? How about top 20. Easy admit to Vanderbilt or Notre Dame, WashU. There are 30 kids in your own class with better GPAs, but yet you think you will be 1 of 1700 students from across the county to make it into these schools? Hop over to the College Discussion forum for a dose of reality.

There are 30 kids above a 3.75 in a sidwell class? Is this true?

More like 35 to 40 with 3.75 and above.

^^^They cannot all be at the same levels of rigor and top colleges want that piece too!

Do 20-25 kids at Sidwell have this or better each year?

This must be a recent thing because I don’t think class 2022 and 2021 were this high

Yes they do. GPA numbers have crept up slightly over the last 5 years. It may have been 15-20 kids with 3.85 and above. Now it is more like 20-25 with those GPAs. Each year his slightly different, of course.

All A grades would be 4.0. A couple of kids a year (at most).

Class of 2021 and 2022 both had over 20 kids with greater than 3.85.

This must be super recent phenomena. Last year’s class was not this high.

Kids are actually working harder as the low probability of top outcomes has become very clear to everyone. So better grades. But, the uptick in grades (GPA) has not translated into better college outcomes. Quite to the contrary actually, as most on this forum know
