Beyond that - everything the President says sets a tone and expectation for how the nation is to respond. By not condemning the white supremacist march until a year later - he was saying I approve of this and support it.

People forget a lot of salient facts about Spencer:
-He’s a very wealthy mama’s boy. Like, his mom owns millions and millions in real estate in Whitefish. Like most pro-Trump stooges, he comes from inherited wealth and hasn’t spent a day of his life living in hardship. If he was a middle class kid who had to take out student loans, he’d be too busy working a real job to have time fantasizing about about a “peaceful ethnic cleansing” of the US by white conservatives.
-Spencer went to Duke with Stephen Miller and they were (are?) good friends. They ran a far right conservative group on campus. So yeah, Spencer had some deep connections to the Administration.

Spencer is and always was a creation of the media. He was a guy lazy reporters could go to to get quotes that would confirm their pre-existing biases.

He is actually a bit like Cindy Shehan in that sense. Shehan was useful when she was attacking GWB and so there were endless fawning articles about her.

When she started going after Obama she was no longer useful and suddenly it was like she didn't exist.
