Tell me about Herndon High

Anonymous
My niece just graduated this spring, she liked it and had great friends and they are all going to great colleges. They are a diverse mix of races. My nephew graduated from Herndon 2 years ago and he was accepted into the engineering program at Va. Tech. He was taking a whole lot of AP classes. He also had a nice friend group. He has SN, ASD and did well.

Seems like a nice school, there are a lot of haters on this forum.

My DD’s GF graduated from Herndon and had a great experience there. She’s smart, nice, and just a great kid, and her HS friends are good kids, too. There is a nice community feel with the city of Herndon!

I wanted to add, I agree with the PP above -=- the diversity is great at HHS!

I was curious about this, so I looked at the data for the number of students in FCPS high schools (and grades 9-12 at secondary schools) transferring out of their base schools last year for reasons other than to attend TJ.

Of course, the number of students who transfer out of their base schools is in part of function of whether other nearby schools are open or closed to transfers, but the data (and this is only for students transferring out of their base schools, and not into those schools) doesn't seem to suggest that the people who are actually are in the Herndon zone view it as a "hidden gem."

Um... the definition of "hidden gem" is literally along the lines of being underappreciated despite having good quality. The data you posted actually further supports the claim that HHS parents who choose to stay do so because they believe the school provides a solid education. Contrary to racists and/or classists who seek transferring out specifically to avoid ethnic diversity. Because who are we really kidding? That's the reason for transferring out.

A few more points for Herndon:

-walkable distance for many students, unlike Langley or Westfield. The school is surrounded by neighborhoods with sidewalks.

-the renovation is amazing.

-Athletic Training Dept. The head trainer shared her personal cell phone number with us after an injury. She is amazing and super helpful. Not sure what other school trainers are like.

- Due to the whole “two school situation”, there are many more opportunities for kids to have leadership positions.

-The Athletic Director LOVES the school and is super engaging. He is at games bringing the community together. He encourages kids to try new sports.

I watched the HHS Baseball Team this spring- including their Regional Championship Game Win at Home- where there were about 1K attendance. They advanced to the State Championship- saw a lot of school and community spirit. They listed where kids were committed from the team- Georgetown, Wake Forest, JMU, Stevenson, etc for Baseball. Not playing in college- attending- UVA, CNU, JMU, Bridgewater, etc. School renovation is great, I like North Reston and Town of Herndon.

Sure, all those parents who actually live in the HHS district and choose to send their kids elsewhere must be wrong. Appreciate the effort to boost but it’s self-defeating when it entails calling the people who actually live in the district “racist and/or classist.”

So it’s racist and/or classist to transfer out of Herndon but one of the advantages of staying there is the “two school situation” where you suggest some kids basically attend a different school than the rest?

I never mentioned anything about kids transfering out. It is a fact though that it is easier to make sports teams and get leadership positions. Does it make it more valueable? Who knows? It still gives driven kids more experience.

Buy into the best school district you can afford like everyone else does. All the people saying herndon is great couldn't afford to live in a better pyramid period.

Herndon is not that diverse, really. You have a lot of Hispanic kids and then fewer, but still a lot of white kids. There are a handful of Black, Arab, East Asian and Indian kids. Both Hispanics and whites are pretty racist towards the other minorities.

Herndon HS is great if you’re white and/or rich.
