How much for engineering undergrad at a top 50 school?

It's baffling to me how much money people are willing to throw away on name brand when the education is identical. If your kid were majoring in something corny like germanic studies then yes it's ivy league or lifetime barista, but engineering will have access to most of the same jobs so you're just flushing your tuition dollars down the toilet

+1000 UMD has a top 20 engineering school.

Agreed. It’s a great school for engineering.

That’s assumes they can get into UMD for engineering which shouldn’t be taken as a given

For engineering? Check again (differential tuition). And room and board is a large expense.

Differential tuition is an extra $3000/year but only for juniors and seniors. Many other schools have much larger differential tuition expenses for engineering. It is doubtful that an in-state student is going to be able to find a school that is as good as UMD for lower tuition.

A lot of people get their MS in Engineering so the undergrad could be a lesser school and the MS from a better engineering school. Also, depending on grades and such, out of state could be waived. There is a lot to think about when picking a school. BTW I have an undergrad degree from a 150-200 ranking engineering school and doing just fine as an engineer and will likely retire early.

Son attending UVM for engineering in the fall. Got merit aid which is bringing our total cost to $30K per year. That’s all inclusive.

While that is not enough for the expensive top ten schools like Cornell, I am hoping it will cover most of the cost at other good schools that are more within reach of average UMC families. So my question: how much are you spending right now on tuition and board for your 4.0 GPA engineering undergrad kid?

Here's a snapshot of DD's cost for her 1st semester of uva engineering, hope this help

Adm Deposit UGrd UVAPay ACH -$400.00
Orientation Fees $214.00
Comprehensive Fees - VA $1,586.00

Is this for one semester or for the whole year?! In state or out of state?

If your kid is fortunate enough to be accepted in state UMD for engineering, run as fast as you can to accept if you are middle class.

The difference you will have to pay elsewhere isn't worth it.

Not the poster, but yes, UVA engineering is ridiculously expensive compared to VA Tech. That's for a semester.

UVA engineering can be much cheaper than VA Tech if you demonstrate need, but if you are middle class... Not so much.

Any degree worth more than $150k won't be worth $150k. Your child will do better to find an affordable program and get into a good grad school.

They are very expensive fir a state school, plus the location isn’t very appealing.

UMD is one of the cheapest among flagships.

I went to Carnegie Mellon for engineering in the stone ages when full-price tuition was "only" $10k/year. Now that my kid wants to get into engineering my alma mater is one of those places that doesn't even make the list.

Full-price annual cost is $75k+ at CMU. Our expected net cost is about $52k per year and we have another kid in high school. UMBC baby!

Mine’s a rising freshman at Princeton and we did not get any financial aid. So we’re paying a little over 70k per year
