We do plan to give gifts on major milestones- a watch for graduation, diamond earrings for 18, but the smaller stuff is gone.

Those aren't gifts. Just say no gifts for birthdays. I don't get that.

Every party we go to has gifts. I don't get parents who refuse gifts for their kids. If your kids have too much stuff cut back what you buy.

This has not been our experience at all.

I wonder if it's the parents projecting their own preference.

Instax camera was huge hit with our 11 year old. You can get accessories to go with it.

Does she have ballet booties for late Fall/Winter? Lots of girls wear them in and out of ballet class. New ballet bag?

Art stuff (there are lots of kits, or you can do sketch book with art set with pastels, colored pencils etc).

Magazine subscription to The Week Jr or another magazine- my reader loves these

Book about dance/ballet

We gave mine an 'experience' at the zoo (backstage passes, meet the animals kind of thing).
