That's what I'm doing now, but I worry about the transition from that to busier streets, because my teen has ADHD (treated, but still) and it's only a matter of time before he has a moment of brake/accelerator confusion, probably when there's a lot of information coming at him quickly (intersection, drivers coming from all around). This particular brake I'm looking at can be installed and removed in a few minutes, and isn't the heavy-duty second brake in driving school vehicles. It has great reviews on Amazon, but I was wondering if someone else on here had ever used something like this:

The embarrassment factor is simply not a consideration, BTW

OP, if you're concerned that your teenager will have brake/accelerator confusion, please consider the possibility that your teenager should not be driving.

And/or get a vehicle with a manual transmission.

So he can have brake/accelerator/clutch confusion?
- manual driver

If you have the clutch pedal down for braking, but you hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal, what happens?

Now, what happens with an automatic transmission if you hit the gas pedal instead of the brake pedal?

This would surely cause an accident because DH would be too quick to break and somehow they would crash. Another vote for the empty parking lot, then side streets.

Yes I can see OP doing this.

Hahaha, most don’t! Still OP is insane.

I ran my mom's car into a fence (in a parking lot) in a brake/accelerator confusion incident. It was the 80s and I caused about $1,000 worth of damage.

Wow many kids from back in the day (1980’s) had undiagnosed ADHD and survived. Please don’t handicap the boy he will be fine.

Exactly! The middle hand break is a relic.

That is a really rare configuration these days. And electric cars don't have emergency breaks at all because they stop when you take your foot off the gas.

Op, I have a kid who has adhd and is on the spectrum. He was nervous to learn how to drive and didn’t start the minute he was eligible. He waited until he was eligible which was at least 6 months after the date he could get his permit. He took driving very seriously. He completely focused on the task and listened to me, dh or his driving teacher. Our state requires 60 hours of practice. Many parents told me their kids did not finish all 60 hours but took the test as soon as they felt comfortable. My ds probably practiced for 120 hours before he took the driving test. He refuses to turn on the radio when he drives and he never texts or answers a phone call. Your ds may surprise you. If you don’t think your ds can drive without the break, then wait for the professional teacher. There is no rush. There is no reason for you to install a device in your car.
