Minorities in lacrosse?

White kids can’t compete in football and basketball so they do country club sports like lacrosse.

You can look at every roster in college or “pro” and it’s 95+% white.

The only “diversity” you might find on a team is Native Americans.

with better competition, white kids will find that they can't compete in lacrosse either,

OP here. I find that lacrosse to be a rich and country club sport is very hard to believe. I thought tennis and golf are CC sports, no? I am Chinese and I see so many Asians in golf and tennis because I am a member at Riverbend CC. There were so many minorities at the tennis tournament, Asians and East Indians, I would say a very diverse group. Looking at across the lacrosse field, I didn’t see any. I don’t know, maybe my perception of lacrosse is wrong.

I see the same thing. My dd's high school tennis team is practically all asian/indian. I think she may be the only white girl on the team. Her hs field hockey team is a little bit more diverse but not strikingly so. Her younger sister plays lacrosse and while I do know of some Asian/POC on various lacrosse teams, it really isn't that much.

Maybe another question is why do so many Asian parents steer their kids to tennis and golf instead of team sports like lacrosse? From my observations, the Asian kids who play tennis/golf have parents who came over to this country. Would that make their kids 1st generation? The Asian kids I know of who play lacrosse are 2nd generation or more. Their parents were also born in this country.

tennis and golf are both sports with social cachet (or at least that perception). It's not surprising that people trying to establish themselves as UMC or UC would push their kids towards those sports

because those sports are reasonably perceived as easier ins. hardly a recent phenomenon. but peer pressure and other things at high schools don't value them as "cool" sports.

^^^ This is false. It is because most Asians/East Asians in the US are wealthier than white people so their kids can afford expensive sports like tennis and golf. It is like rich people hanging out other rich people. Tennis and golf have highest barrier of entry due to cost. Of course, there are exceptions.

Golf lessons cost $200/hour with an instructor, and might go up to $1000/hr. Can’t imagine lacrosse private lessons cost more than $75/hr.

If you parents didn't play lacrosse, you have a low chance of picking up the sport yourself. Either your parents played, or a friend/family friend personally introduced you to the sport. That means most children of immigrants aren't playing lacrosse... that is slowly changing for children of immigrants who may have played.

You can practice tennis and golf on your own. You don't need to join into a larger group/community to get better at golf and tennis. With lacrosse, you need the access to team/coaches/clubs that are predominately if not almost exclusively white.

If you have money for equipment and access to instruction, coaches, a team. That is not true for every child.

It is not true for thousands and thousands of kids. For youth sports...

From 2008 to 2018, the participation rate of kids between the ages of 6 and 12 dropped from 45 to 38 percent, due largely to the increasing costs, time commitments, and competitive nature of organized sports leagues.Jan 27, 2021

This is bullshit. There are plenty of rec sports out there where the cost is minimal. If you really want to play a sport, you can.

Anonymous wrote:My DD, who is Asian, plays college lacrosse. While there are POC playing lacrosse at the rec level, in high schools and in college, they are relatively few. This is due in part to the expense of the game, but also to implicit bias. If a parent or coach or travel team manager's image of a lacrosse player is a white person, then it's less likely that they'll encourage POC to play the sport.

LOL that is stupid. Every lacrosse coach wants a kid who is athletic and with good stick skills and field IQ. That is their "image of a lacrosse player". They do not give a shit what color the kid is. Your "image of a lacrosse coach" is stuck in some pre-Civil Rights Era fantasyland.

Anonymous wrote:And, that, in turn, means that fewer POC will want to play the sport because they don't see many people who look like them playing it.

Or maybe they just don't want to. My son is tall and quick and "should" like basketball but simply isn't interested.

I've also noticed a lot of Asian ice skaters - both professionally and at local rinks. I chalked it all up to Asians preferring individual over team sports.

Have you asked yourself why that would be? Maybe because Asian kids aren't always welcomed on teams?

A good read on the topic from a black mom’s perspective and a black boy’s perspective:

Maybe this cringe “give me happy feelz about being on the team or I won’t play” stuff applies to girls sports, but on a boys team if you are a great player who will help the team win, they don’t care what color you are.
