Are my expectations too high? Beach house cleanliness

We just use paper and plastic.

Own sheets and towels, too. My mom always did this. Now I know why. The "nicest" beach houses have too many people in them, so they are gross, too.

All the surfaces are clean - so, bathrooms for example are sparkling - but the drawers and cupboards are gross and the dishes are dirty. We found perishable foods (think raw meat) in kitchen cupboards, OTC medication and random trash in drawers, hair in the dish cabinet. The unit did not come with dish soap and it's clear that prior guests didn't buy any. There are a million pots and pans but all in terrible shape: I actually threw out one that left Teflon shards on our nice local seafood.

I want to say something to the owner when I check out, but I also want to make sure I'm not crazy. I mean, it's gross that the dishes are dirty but also maybe unrealistic for the maid to check every dish in the cupboard? What is normal?

The dishes are probably dirty because someone ran the dishes on the wrong cleaning mode. Not saying it si right, just saying that is what is likely. People are stupid and lazy, OP.

OP, people get drunk and stupid at beach houses. The amount of day drinking is shocking, and I'm no prude. Stuff gets broken, etc. If you are really unhappy, you better call the owner now, or they will think you are just trying to get money back - which people try to do sometimes - because beach houses are expensive (and sometimes other parties in their party do not show up, etc.). Other people are born complainers. Differentiate yourself to the owner.
