Vacationing in a Communist country

Like 16:37 I was in the USSR in 1984 under communism.
We were definitely corraled away from the locals as much as possible, had a state guide, they kept our passports. I doubt it's anything like that now, but get an up to date guide book, like Lonely Planet. In any case, the places I went were wonderful, even if the people were very reserved (except the younger ones who loved to talk to Americans). Moscow, Kiev, and the Black Sea areas, and the Caucasus region were all fascinating.
