Can we normalize the "runner's wave" again?

I am from the South. Have lived up and down the east coast. The father north I've gone, the less likely other people were likely to acknowledge a wave or a head nod. Some people would try to avoid me if I said hello. Maybe more people coming in from other regions where not acknowledging people is the norm.

Oh - I have been waving and smiling to everyone I pass since the pandemic started & I never stopped. I don’t know if that’s the only interaction they get all day! And if some people don’t return it - ahh well idc.

Please don't wave at me. It offers no solidarity and means less than nothing.

Hi pp! I'm going to wave at you every day.

There was a woman who I waved to nearly every day for over a year, and she pretended like I didn't exist. Then one day, she did a head nod. Then eventually a tiny flip of the hand. Then she started initiating with a pretty solid big wave every time she saw on me. Sadly I moved a short distance away and no longer see her, but this is actually one of my proudest running accomplishments.

I will win you over. It may take time, but sooner or later you will be one of Those People.

Your knees will give out and turn to sawdust before I wave back.

Even if I have to walk or crawl, I will win. That's a promise

Maybe, after years of ignoring the wave, I will finally give the most condescending of head nods, reminiscent of this:

I like the idea of waving, but I run a busy loop in Brooklyn, and if I waved at every runner I pass I’d be waving about 70% of the time. Can we just agree in urban areas that this isn’t necessary? Sort of like how you don’t say hi to every passerby?

Please don’t wave to strangers. Someone might interpret it in the wrong way and that could lead to a lot of problems.

A friend of mine years ago waved to someone in the parking lot being friendly at the grocery store. She did not know the person. The guy followed her home and raped her.

Wave to people you know, otherwise be cautious.

That's over the top paranoid pp. Don't wave to strangers in grocery store parking lots.

Waving at other runners/pedestrians, particularly ones you see regularly, particularly a woman to another woman... is incredibly harmless.

Slightly tangential bit DH drives an older, rarer car with a niche following. He loves waving or giving a head nod to fellow drivers. It’s often ignored or unnoticed but when he gets a wave back, we all cheer! Fun on long road trips.

And I had a great time driving home from the beach; two others with my same car drove up and waved me over to join them! We had an caravan over the Bay Bridge and drove for miles after together! So much fun!

Oh honey, no.

More like: "I see you, I acknowledge what you look like and are wearing, so if you attack me I'll give police solid info."
