Exactly. After watching the way things went with Covid, I am not convinced their undoubtedly more competent government made such a huge difference in the long run. The main difference is they made school opening a true priority.

+1. Like many other countries (and some States here), Germany prioritized keeping schools open, not pandering to teachers unions. These WTU trolls keep pulling up any difference between Germany and the US and claiming it's a reason we can't open schools like Germany did. It's ridiculous. And if we're worse with compliance and our death rate is still low, then that's all the more reason to open schools.

Germany also has public healthcare.

Teachers have healthcare, and they're the reason that DC public schools haven't reopened. Try again, WTU troll.

Germany is not a country of morons who see mask wearing as a political issue.

Mask compliance is no better in Germany then in DC. The comparison to Texas is irrelevant here. And by the way, Germany only requires masks in schools for fifth grade and up.

But do Germans know the difference between "then" and "than"? Why are the dumb ones always the loudest?

If that is your entire argument, you know you've lost.

No kidding. And as I noted in a subsequent post, it was my failure to correct the spelling of the voice recognition (twice, I know, on my phone). I AM a stickler for spelling, but you can't edit your posts here.

But the students and parents of those student don't.

Do you have anything better to do then call people you disagree with WTU trolls.

BTW with my fat WTU Troll check I'm going to buy a studio in Ward 3 and mess with your PTA.

Germans mostly wear N95 masks in public. It is required in stores and public transport. Its an extra level of protection for everyone and service workers. This is true of many other European countries.

This is a fairly recent development. And as others have mentioned, they do not require masks in elementary school. Not in the classroom. Since this thread is about the distancing requirements within classrooms, that is the only relevant point, besides the question of community spread (which, as is becoming increasingly clear, is actually not that relevant for the safety of schools).

Well, as long as you decided what was relevant to discuss - there you go. Community spread in schools with mirror community spread in the general population.

It’s not what I have decided, it’s what a number of experts have lately been saying. And the spread within schools is usually lower than that in the community.

Spread "within" schools, but schools are not immune. All our neighborhood schools have had to quarantine classes.

Quarantining is good. It means the system is working. The goal is not to not have quarantined (at least not now or anytime in the foreseeable future when covid is actively circulating). People are getting covid in the community, just like other people. Spread though is significantly lower in schools than in the community, meaning it’s safer being in schools, unless of course you’re just locked in your house still without any family and friend exposure.

Do the Germans quarantine? How many times has the JKLM quarantined?

German schools don't necessarily quarantine the entire class. They just quarantine the kids who sat in close proximity to a case (remember, elementary school kids don't wear masks in class, and last fall, that was also true for higher grades). It has happened to a couple of my relatives (FWIW, in none of the cases any of the other kids tested positive).

To bring this all back to the topic of this thread, from the experience in other countries as well as the study out of Massachusetts, there is no evidence that we need 6 feet distancing to be safe in schools, especially WITH masks.

Finally announced! I need all my students back in the classroom, this hybrid system sucks and I will still have to live it as long as parents are given the option to stay all virtual.

Can you Germany people start your own thread? This one is about DCPS/DOH/CDC updating guidelines.

https://www.cnn.com/2021/03/19/health/cdc-physical-distancing/index.html

The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Friday is updating its physical distancing guidelines for children in schools from 6 feet to 3 feet.

hmm... "At times when it's not possible to accommodate masks, like when eating, CDC says six feet of distance should be maintained."

that's going to be prohibitive to increasing class sizes in many schools. where do the kids eat then??

Staggered schedules and shorter lunch period spread out outside or in a cafeteria. Our school does that now. Lunch periods start at 11 and go until 1 on staggered schedules

In addition, for the near future, it's going to be warm and perhaps kids can go outside to eat (still with a staggered schedule)?

DCPS is still planning for cohorts of 10-11 for summer school. I don’t think there is going to be much change for Term 4

Right? It's not that hard to imagine options. "Where do the kids EAT then?" she asked blankly, pondering the vastness of space and time, some of which must contain children, somewhere, eating sandwiches.
