We got into Kent Gardens right away (as in, in the spring/early summer, for that summer) a few years ago. We enjoyed it, then moved to Domionion Hills when we got off that waitlist and really enjoyed how much closer it is to us. |
Army Navy Country Club - you don't have to do the full membership, there is a pool option |
+1 I'd love more info on this. We were thinking about putting one in next year, but maybe we need to get on a list now for contractors? |
PP here again. To clarify, we liked KG and it was great how quickly we got in. DH just ended up being closer to us (and the pools are larger and a bit nicer). |
I think DR is the best of the pools. We were on wait-list for all of them and recently got off overlee but declined it, I went a few times two summers ago and it is packed and totally unrelaxing. DH I would only join if I was in the neighborhood and it was more convenient. |
DR has residency requirements - there’s a super-clear map is posted on the website - which makes for a wonderful, neighborhood feel. The swim team is historically good but not Overlee-good or Overlee-intense (heh heh).
I’ve heard that families are offered August-September memberships as soon as one year after joining the waiting list, with full summer memberships offered around the four or five year mark. A shareholder membership takes a few extra years but that doesn’t matter to most people - just if you want to run for the board or something. |
If you’re a gs15 you can join fort Myer officers club and pool.
That is by far the best pool in the region. Water slides, lots of events during summer. Fun place in general. |
Is that pool ever re-opening? |
I grew up swimming at Chesterbrook. It’s my favorite pool in the area, because the lower lap pool allows for an area primarily for adults. Chesterbrook is also closer to my North Arlington neighborhood than most of the other pools listed. The swim team is also excellent.

Isn't the pool membership like $10k? |
Donaldson Run is boring. |
The lots in Arlington aren’t that big, so most people who want to put one in run into setback issues, and Arlington is not generous with the variances for pools. There are also maximum lot coverage limits may prevent you from putting in anything but a dipping pond. If you’re on a half acre and have a reasonably sized house, though, you might be able to do it. |
Yup! We moved literally one street over and we were no longer eligible to be members at DR because we were now “outside the map”. They are militant about it, so don’t think you’re going to pull a fast one on them. We had been full members there for 3 years after having been August only members for 5 years before that. Made no difference. |
Agree with this. But I don't think you have to be gs15, I thought there was a range, like gs 13-15. |
How do people deal with 5-10 year waiting lists for pools? Are your kids in grade school before they get to swim on a regular basis? |
