I'm sick of the drama with my HOA/neighbors

We lived in a small townhouse community with an HOA. Everyone in the neighborhood was lovely with the exception of one man. He made such trouble for everyone. We replaced rotting wood around windows with siding, chose the color closest to the original, and got the change approved by the Board. This guy got so angry about our nicer looking exterior that he sued us and the Board (which was silly, because he was paying for his own lawyer and the lawyer the Board had to hire using HOA dues). Of course that lawsuit went nowhere. This guy would just cause a ruckus for any reason, plus he was racist and obviously treated neighbors that were not white differently ("those people shouldn't live here"). Many neighbors left the community because of this guy, and my H and I haven't lived in an HOA community since.
