Why am I embarrassed?

if I came over and saw that I would be uncomfortable. I have hobbies and interests, but when I spend money on them they are for experiences, rather than products.

Maybe just ... don't bring any more stuff into the house and for your next HP indulgence re-read the books or cook the foods they mention if any (I know nothing about HP), or re-enact your favorite scenes with your family, or after Covid, go to the HP amusement parks.

You sound as vanilla as they come, PP. You’d be uncomfortable, seriously? I can see thinking “Oookay...” or “What a waste of money,” but to be physically uncomfortable by a memorabilia display? Do you feel the urge to avoid museums or themed exhibitions, too? So odd. Odder than a Harry Potter themed room, even.

It's not a memorabilia display. Their ENTIRE DOWNSTAIRS is done up this way. My grandmother had what we referred to as "the cousin shrine" which was a small cabinet that had pictures of all us grandkids all over the top. That was funny and fine.

Show that $&$&$ off. Slightly tongue in cheek, and then shift because this is real. It will let you feel in control of whatever is causing you to feel embarrassed.

"Suzie, let me show you where we've been spending all of our free covid times time! At first it felt so silly, but it really became a fun thing we did together as a family! It's really be a joy"

Anyone who says a word other than, "How great!" to that (sincerely) has no soul.

Enthusiasm is social courage.

Society is very “yeah, whatever.” Be the person who cares about something! Who has an interest! Even if you feel a bit uncomfortable at first. People like you are way more interesting and fun than people whose interests and hobbies are “watching TV and hanging out with friend and family.”

I love this! Great perspective.

OP here. It’s not our entire lower level. We have a room down there with a TV and theater chairs and now, this HP stuff. The rest of our house is void of the stuff. We have three other rooms and a bathroom down there that are completely void of any theming; a play room, a sitting area, and a guest room.

My kids and I are not HP fans at all. We would think nothing of it... beyond they’re HP fans. Lordy, you’ve been in quarantine too long or you don’t know very nice people.

Can I come over? I want to be friends with someone that has a Harry Potter-themed theater room.

Things like this help you sort out who your friends should be. People who say they’d be uncomfortable? That’s good info, bc now you know not to waste time on these folks.

Who cares?? HP is awesome. I started reading them in college and my family and I all love the books. Universal Studios is AMAZING and you have to report back once you finally go.

Some people got obsessed with sourdough or their peloton during the pandemic. Some became raging alcoholics or abused drugs to get through this time. You enjoy a lovely set of books? Nothing to be ashamed about.

Can I come over? I’ll bring the butter beer!

Wow. You have so many great things. I love Harry Potter as well. It's my favorite fantasy series. I don't get how there are people who are making fun of other people's passions. A close friend of mine visited me once and I had a banner on the wall related to the houses that are present in Harry Potter. He immediately started laughing and making fun of me. I've felt pretty embarrassed, but I am not planning on giving up my passions because of people like him. I've even found some interesting quizzes from https://www.solutiontales.com/quiz/harry-potter-house-quiz-let-the-sorting-hat-decide-where-you-belong/ to see in which house I belong. It's pretty fun and you should give it a try!

This is wonderful, thank you for posting! I have never read anything along these lines and think it’s so true and awesome. I hope I can teach my kids to live this way too. OP, your interest is great, don’t be embarrassed!
