Agreed. We are downcounty and our Black boys have been supported and challenged in what’s considered the “not so good/up and coming” schools by those that live west of 355. Both of my sons have had amazing Black teachers, administrators, and counselors. BWI is also our preferred airport and we can get there in 30 minutes or so on the ICC. National is 45 minutes away. Parts of Howard are a good choice as well. -Black MoCo family |
| HCPSS can be tricky with unconscious bias for our black boys, but I agree with the previous post on Elliott City schools feeding into Howard High. Howard High, and feeders, are more balanced than the extremes (Glenelg, Oakland Mills). |

Montgomery county has some of the best outcomes for black boys.

Howard county 4 yr graduation rates for African American students range from 88.7 to 90.3%.
Also, Hammond High School is finally getting a long overdue renovation. This article may be of interest. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/answer-sheet/wp/2018/07/10/how-one-school-successfully-boosted-minority-student-enrollment-in-advanced-classes/ |
The graduation rate of African American for 2020 is 91.3%. For such a large school district, this is really impressive. https://www.montgomeryschoolsmd.org/press/index.aspx?pagetype=showrelease&id=10546&type=&startYear=&pageNumber=&mode= |

MCPS has an “at a glance” summary on each school. Could get a sense of diversity at each

I will get flames but prwcovid- montogomery county schools/ specifically west bethesda/rockville/Potomac is one of the best school districts around and in the US. I am also AA and live in Bethesda. The downside is finding an area within that is diverse enough for your family. My elementary dc has a hard time with the lack of diversity (just 1, not the other).
Post covid all of mcps has been in flames. They have not opened ALL YEAR. Honestly the odds are low but I would do a private school for a year or 2 that has alot of students with adhd. I cant remember the most popular ones, field? Lab? You can search the private school forum for adhd or LD (learning disabilities). Otherwise your child will be probably be home more than not. |
Add rockville with silver spring. Great schools in some parts with good diversity. |
I meant learning differences. |
Dufief teachers are largely white women from rural Pennsylvania who have had little exposure to black people. I would recommend somewhere else. |
| FCPS? |
| OP, if MCPS then consider Wootton. This is one of the W schools and they are most desirable clusters for a reason. People who try to steer you from this might have some hidden agenda. If you want better education then definitely go for it and definitely do run this through the special needs forum for more input. Also learn all you can about rezoning plans in MCPS.. as this might affect where your house will end up regardless of where it is today as you buy it. That is why FCPS is safer from the perspective of real estate stability as they are not dealing with impending mass rezoning as MCPS and have much better resources for special needs. |
