SJP's Grub Street Diet

Anonymous
This is how I eat. I will skip breakfast and I don’t snack unless I’m reeeeally hungry, but the meals I do eat are high protein, high carb with lots of spice and flavor, and no skimping on fat. When you add it all up, it’s not that much because of all the stuff I don’t eat. But people will see me having chocolate cake or a big steak and wonder how I stay thin. I love food and I don’t diet. But I don’t mind feeling hungry between meals because I know the payoff will be good.

Ummm, yeah, you do diet.

How is not eating when you’re not hungry, “dieting”? Healthy adults don’t have to have three squares a day.

Different poster. Many people eat around a meal time because they are starting to feel hungry. You don’t eat anything from dinner on day one to at least lunch on day 2, even if hungry...unless you’re “reeeeally” hungry. You essentially do intermittent fasting until your next meal that you’re really, really hungry for. That’s dieting.

Disagree, NP, I think you vastly underestimate the number of Americans (and Europeans) who skip breakfast or just have a perfunctory bite of something- the idea that they are all on this regimented "diet" is laughable. I tend to skip breakfast--if I'm hungry of course I'll have some fruit, yogurt or kids' leftovers. But when I am eating "best" I am eat like the first poster. Two good diverse meals, limited snacks except fruit and the occasional homemade dessert. I think it is crazy that the extremely common practice (worldwide) of actually getting "hungry" for your next meal is considered "disordered."
