Teachers who have been DL for a year - tell us what you haven't had to put up with

Virtual PT conferences are also kind of nice. No delay, sharing information on screens is easy too.

Aa a parent, I like these too.

+1, so nice not to have to go in when it can be done online.

-Not having to drive across the county for trainings and meetings that can EASILY be accomplished virtually. In fact, we probably get a lot more done because no one is rushing to beat traffic and trainings can be recorded in case you need to go back and reference something. Plus, you can do more sessions in a day because you don’t have to change locations. 99% of PDE can and should be done virtually going forward.
- Getting colds, flu, and strep from students. I’m usually pretty lucky but it’s happened a few times.

There's very little traffic right now.

...yes, because we are doing a lot of things virtually that never needed to be in person in the first place. Like PDE trainings. Even in a very low traffic situation, driving from western Fairfax to Alexandria is a significant time suck.

I don't miss this at ALL!

I really hope this is a troll thread, because it seems designed to make parents think teachers are assholes.

Their parents don't want to deal with them so they don't make them do anything they don't want to do. We still have meetings about them but it usually boils down to poor parenting or lack of parenting and the parents tell us they don't want to deal with them.

I no longer have to wait with students whose parents don't pick them up after school. That was an almost daily occurrence.

Please quit your job, you are an embarrassment to the profession. No teacher should be glad all of the adults have simply given up on a child.

Your response makes no sense.

I hope you're right. I was fearing that it was real. But this must be a troll thread.

Agree. This is something they should keep after COVID, at least as an option. It would increase parental participation among those who have legitimate reasons to find it hard to get to an appointment in person (though not in the parents whou just don't give a crap).

Last year, I lost my second job because there were 3-4 parents who would pick their kids up late every day. I had to wait with the students until their parents showed up. My after-school job fired me because I was late too often. I've been able to tutor online for the last few months and it has helped with my bills.

I agree. (I also want to keep contactless delivery)

And those parents probably never learned that their actions affected you negatively.

HUGE time suck! Teaching is 50% actual teaching and 50% dealing with behavioral issues and distractions. And it’s easier to deal with behavior stuff if you have smaller class sizes. I found (ex ms teacher) 26 students was manageable. For some reason 27 students made it so much harder.

As for everyone else who is telling teachers to shut up and do their job. I wanted to do my job—be a teacher. I wanted to be treated like a professional that I am. And lunch duty or hall duty or any of those other things took away from teaching.

Let’s be honest here. You don’t let some students use the bathroom.

Probably not.

I didn’t do clubs when my daughters were younger because my students would not get picked up on time and then I would be late picking my own kids up from daycare. The daycare charged $15 for the first 15 min late and then $5 a min after that. My students’ parents would show at 5:15 for 4:30 dismissal from clubs with no more consequences than a warning that if they were an hour late CPS would be called.
