PLEASE help me choose schools for the DCPS lottery -- new to DC and confused.

We did not do any lottery/apply anywhere for Sept 10 (our daughter will turn 3 in aug). Out of curiosity, is there any chance at all of getting a spot for her in the fall at one of the schools mentioned given the shifting in waitlists etc.? We have done no homework whatsoever (yet) so don't know anything about any of the schools. If we have missed the boat completely (we are not even sure if we want to start her at 3) that is OK, we'll gear up for 2011 in time!

You'd only be in-bounds for one school. Check http://dcatlas.dcgis.dc.gov/schools/ to find out which school that is, and apply for PS there. You can also apply elsewhere, but frankly I think your chances are very, very slim.

Thanks. I did enter our address and looks like we are inbounds for Eaton, Cooke, Hearst, Hyde, Layfayette, Murch, Ross, Thompson & West of the DCPS + a number of the charters (apple tree, cap city, bridges, EL Haynes). Of course I'm not sure which of these have PS or PK! Will check. Like I said, not sure we're on-board for full day, 5 days/wk PS in the fall anyway.

Forgive me, but I think you're getting some very bad information. I don't see how you could be inbounds for more than one school, let alone schools as far apart as the ones you name (it would take a good 20 minutes to drive from Lafayette to Thomson). And no-one is "in bounds" for charters--they're obligated to take children without any regard for geography.

SORRY! you are absolutey right. I entered our address then clicked "all elementary" thinking it would give me all elementry schools we were in-bounds for. OOPS! we are in-bounds for only Ross & Francis-Stevens.

Ross doesn't have a PS program (it starts at PK). Call F-S and get on that list.

Sorry -- formatting snafu. Here's what I meant to say: Ross doesn't have a PS program (it starts at PK). Call F-S and get on that list.
