To my colleagues (and others) that don’t wash their hands in the bathroom….

I honestly do not understand the logic of not washing one's hands after one uses the restroom. And yes, we all think of you who don't do it as dirty and disgusting.

Wash your goddamn hands people. Christ. This should not be an issue that is up for discussion. There's no defensible position for not washing.

Is it just Americans in the Western world who are so lazy about this?

Ha ha ha, totally, because the majority of the rest of the world has access to clean water and plumbing . . .

It isn't complex logic to follow . . . the fact is the vast majority of people who wash their hands in the bathroom do it ineffectively and contaminate their hands with fecal matter before exiting the bathroom.

Still better than not washing your hands. And if you think it is socially acceptable behavior not to, you are wrong.

Please. Of course wash hands after using the bathroom, of course use hand sanitizer.... but honestly, there are germs everywhere. Purses and shoes are infested with gross germs. Staplers, pens, doorknobs, just about everything one touches has yuck stuff on it. I mean... riding on Metro?... forget about it. Or does everyone here have their own BMW? Our immune system helps protect us against this stuff.

I believe in hand washing, but clearly the topic has some people unhinged. It's like watching a Monk episode. Funny.

Oh, Lord. Have you ever been outside of the D.C. Metro Area? Perhaps a foreign land? Perhaps a third world country? Do you have ANY idea? Any clue whatsoever? Where do you think these diseases come from? It's not your colleague.

This is absolutely the stupidest thing I've ever read. The "vast majority"? Really? So that's what you tell yourself for why you don't wash? The truth is, you're disgusting and filthy.

Keyboards are disgusting, so be sure to disinfect those as well:

Hand sanitizers are good in a pinch but I can't justify using them as your primary hand washing. Just the principle of the thing for me - it's like the treadmill at the gym on a gorgeous fall day. Go run outside.

And the fact is - your colleagues do not think you are using sanitizer at your desk. They think you are disgusting. And they talk about you behind your back.

Where do you all work that you hang out in the bathroom together, observe each other's hand washing habits, and talk about them with each other?

Between all this talking about potty habits and venting on DCUM, when you all do work?

I'm the hand sanitizer user. My colleagues know exactly what I'm doing, because we've actually had this chat after someone read an article about the amount of poo found on various surfaces in the average public restroom. We shared it, laughed about it, and agreed that it was disgusting to wash your hands only to touch about 14 poo covered surfaces before getting back into the office. So not only do they know what I do, they agree and do the same.

We think people that wash their hands are disgusting, and we talk about them behind their backs. They run tepid water over their hands for like 8 seconds and then contaminate them immediately before they even get to the paper towel dispenser. Disgusting pigs.

Well, it's after 9 at night and I try to be home around 5:30 so usually not at work. But I work at nonprofit, I focus on health and health care policy. And just yesterday, one of my colleagues was commenting on how disgusting it was when someone didn't wash her hands after using the bathroom.

And, we actually talked about a lot this fall when HR posted "please wash your hands" signs when H1N1 was in full swing. A lot of folks in the bathroom laughed that adults had to be reminded of this.
