Nanny traveling to family get together

We obviously couldn’t tell her she couldn’t go, and now we’d like her to quarantine for a week and test for Covid before returning to work with us. Are we expected to compensate her for this week off? It seems super irresponsible of her to do this, and I don’t think she deserves a paid one week vacation upon return. But there’s nothing in her contract about this scenario since we didn’t anticipate it.

Well, aren’t you nice.

Nanny here and you’re comment is absolutely untrue and ridiculous. These are serious times and nanny was irresponsible.

Yes, OP. She should quarantine and be tested. You should have discussed it prior to her going but her quarantine time should come out of her vacation and PTO even if in future.

It’s telling that you think of this as a hard ball game. These are our lives we’re talking about. I would rather have no nanny over COVID-19 any day. Not OP by the way.

DP. If it's a hardship for her, then she shouldn't go.

Why should people be able to do whatever they want and then expect others to work around them, and pay them for their entitlement?

Like all of the teachers that are traveling, yet claim that stepping into a school is death sentence? All the while we pay them for not educating our students. Yeah, that pisses me off to.
And OP, she is not your indentured servant. She can travel as she sees fit and you are welcome to fire her.

What?! There is no company in the world that can require their employee quarantine after visiting family if it is not required by law or in their contract and not pay them. Do not listen to any of these posters, this is a potential lawsuit and I would absolutely pay her if I were you.

Is that so?

Suppose the nanny chooses to travel more often, perhaps going to weddings, family events every month, or every other weekend. Would you still paying her for all those days she would have to quarantine?

Husband's work policy is unlimited quarantine IF you didn't travel somewhere. If you travel, you pick up the expense of your quarantine.

If you don't pay her... she just won't tell you next time she plans to travel.

Why do you trust such an irresponsible person to be in charge of the health and safety of your children when you are not home?

My company’s rule is that if you travel to another state that requires quarantine upon your return you must quarantine for 14 days and can use a mix of sick and vacation time, or elect to work from home for part. From what I know from friends this is fairly common at many different companies this is fairly common.

If you are insisting that she quarantine for a week then, obviously, you pay her. This is common sense.

We have been quarantining, wearing masks, and social distancing since March. You must be pretty damn stupid if you waited this long to address trips that either of you might take!

She never should have told you.
