No lawyer will defend a debt collection action on a contingency basis. If you can't afford a lawyer you need to seek a pro bono one or a legal clinic. Debt collection and bankruptcy are kind of like bread and butter issues for legal clinics. I'd contact the DC Bar to refer you some agencies. If they can't represent you, they may give you a consultation at a periodic clinic.
