Why? Please site science and evidence? because a group exercise class with people appropriately spaced is no different than people spaced out the same distance on cardio equipment or the weight floor. Bowser closing group fitness classes but keeping gyms open shows how little logic is being used in making these decisions. |

I want everything closed until schools can open. And I want schools to open first. This maddening double standard on what can be open, while schools remain permanantly closed has got to stop.
If kids are supposed to learn over zoom, you can damn well do your workout over zoom. |
I'm so tired of this being the argument. I think a gym CAN be fine if certain protocol is followed BUT this is a shitty reason to use because our contract tracing is crap, so we don't really know. And based on the DCUM folks on these threads, they'd be the ones refusing to cooperate with the contact tracers and/or failing to admit that they were at the gym. |
Why should we punished for your life choices? Keep the gyms open. |

And liquor stores have stayed 100% open

Only with federal funds is this possible. And McConnell and Senate Republicans want to let the country burn to achieve their political goals, one of which is — don’t get people used to the government helping them. |
Ours hasn’t |
| Gyms, churches, and indoor dining all need to close but they won’t do it. |
I'm so tired of your argument that people have no idea what's going on at their gyms. Those of us who are regulars go at the same time, see all the same people. I take a class with 16 people (8ft apart), and I see the same faces every single week (in addition to when I workout on my own). There's no rule, but we also almost always take the same spot. I see the same employees, trainers, other regulars, many of whom I'm friends with and don't report on any cases. Everyone's continuing to show up healthy - as am I. Yes, perhaps formal contact tracing is poor, but many of us have a network of people that we see and trust at the gym. I made it a habit 8 years ago and lost 50lbs, plus made a ton of friends. To me and many others it's not at all like indoor dining, because at least I'm actively working on my health and *reducing* my covid risk by maintaining my weightloss, physical, and mental health. Also, the data just doesn't support gyms being a hotspot. But you do you. |
Covid is most spread right now by private indoor gatherings at homes. What's your plan for that? I get that you feel anxious and out of control, but closing down the above things isn't going to stop or even slow covid that much, unless you have police knocking on people's doors . |
Severely limiting what is open will have a chilling affect on home gatherings when we need it most. Right now, we need to go back to April shutdown levels. And we need people not to gather (again) for the holidays. Keeping gyms open contributes to the idea that everything is fine as long as you are careful (masks, social distance). But it’s not fine. Also, the more the virus is circulating (and DC had over 300 new cases again yesterday), the more likely it is that it will start to spread at gyms, in grocery stores, etc. |
MoCo has done a really job deflecting this with the (somewhat) revised outdoor mask mandate. Nextdoor has been filled with posts from people once see that they saw a runner, dog walker, etc. outside without a mask on, but largely silent about how you can eat inside a restaurant without a mask on. Everyone’s bought into their assertion that more outdoor mask wearing is really what is needed while the indoor activities continue.... |
| Incensed, not once see! |
Really? I think it’s actually more likely people will just meet at their house for dinner rather than at the restaurant. Anyone who is ok with indoor dining already is likely to be unfazed by meeting at a house instead. I think it sends some mixed messaging when we push for masks/6ft distance but then say, well that’s not really enough. I have family members (not here) who are resistant to wear masks for that reason, because in their mind they are gearing the masks aren’t good enough for actually doing anything, so why bother? |
| Gyms should close completely until February 1st, four weeks after New Year's gatherings and travel, and once vaccines have begun to be distributed to the most at-risk. That is only 7-8 weeks of sacrifice. |
