What amenities are there in Howard county? Seriously?
It's a boring county, not much to do.

And the fact that a poster called Olney “rural” makes me think he’s never been to Olney.

We live in Brookeville on the border of Olney. It’s a good location if you need to commute to DC or Baltimore the occasionally but prefer a hometown feel.

Olney is FamilyTown, USA.

Have you compared crime rates for the zip codes or neighborhoods? I would start there.

This is true but Columbia has revitalized in the past 10 years. As someone else mentioned, tons of green spaces, any major retailer nearby, etc. Olney, to me, is lifeless but that's me.

I like Olney, but it does not compare to what Columbia offers. Get over it. Olney is just I want Bethesda but couldn’t afford it.

Well this is a sweeping and also silly statement. Here is a rundown of Ellicott City, just north of Columbia. Howard County is a fabulous place to raise a family. Does that mean it’s better than other areas? I have no idea, that all comes down to personal preferences. But the county has a ton to offer. And while it continues to attract more and more folks, it is still a hell of a lot less congested than MoCo.

Many neighborhoods in Olney are built on walking trails. Even pre-covid people were always walking and biking.

Kids can fish nearby (multiple ponds). Some kids taking horse riding lessons nearby.

Sports are a big deal. We have multiple leagues for everything.

So, we don’t really need a local mall. We do have multiple grocery stores and any basic store you need.

Plus, we have multiple beer farms and brew houses and a wine bar. We’re definitely not a lifeless area.

You Columbia boosters need to learn how to read. In your excitement to prop up Columbia, you all are looking foolish.
The first poster claimed that in terms of amenities, HOWARD COUNTY wins hands down. Really? Against MoCo?
What amenities?

Well, instead of sounding irrationally angry, why don’t you break down the differences between the two areas in a factual, measured basis?

Start with crime rates. Columbia has more poverty and crime. Full stop.

This is certainly true when comparing Columbia to Olney.

But you were getting yourself all wound up over the amenities between the two counties as a whole--want to break down the differences for everyone?

So, y'all cannot back up your claim when asked and for that you call us irrationally angry? LOL
You Columbia/ HoCo boosters are too insecure and defensive.
It's ok, maybe one day HoCo will stop being the step child.

It's your camp that claimed HoCo wins hands down on amenities, You have to break it down and prove it to everyone.

Most people in moco hate Bethesda and it’s ilk.

Funny, isn't it? They made the claim about amenities but they want us to prove it.

Both are fine but I prefer Columbia. And I live a stones throw from Olney.

Traffic is a pain in Olney but I do prefer driving in Olney vs Columbia. Not only is it confusing but it can get heavy at any time and people drive really fast.

Um, not really.

FTR, I’m not the poster who got wound up on amenities. I’m the poster who commented on crime.

DH and I lived in Columbia and rented for two years before kids. We moved there after grad school fully intending to buy a home and build our family there. Long story short, we moved to Olney. Crime played a role, as did schools and overall community feel.

I grew up in MoCo, so perhaps some bias played into it as well. I just love Olney in a way I never liked Columbia. Shrug.
