So if we were out of earshot, if another kid in the neighborhood heard it they would tell me hey you got to go home. I had forgotten about that until this thread. I have not thought about that for years. I am in my mid-50s.

My mother did this as well but with a metal bell. We have 7 kids in the family (kids, the youngest is now 56). My parents also put a doorbell in the kitchen so they wouldn't have to yell upstairs to talk to us. We each had our own signal, mine was a short and a long. One extra long ring meant everyone had to come down. It was great, my parents hardly went upstairs.

Yes, but only because a family member used to work for a gong company and gave us a small one. Company sold super-high quality ones used by musicians.

Rarely used unless small children come to visit, but a conversation piece.

No, we aren't monks!

We had a gong in my old office. We would use it when we finished a big project or solved a tough issue.

Intrigued by post.

Are gongs having their moment? (Instagram, houzz)?

OP here. Not sure if gongs are a thing, but I saw one at an online auction and it piqued my interest. We aren't in a big house, but I do have a dinner bell, which I use to let the kids know we are ready to eat, and I thought a gong might be fun. Not as an everyday thing, but for special occasions. Long story short, I went ahead about bought the gong. Everybody's entitled to one weird pandemic purchase, right? Maybe they will be a thing now. :p

Thank you for this thread! I have never considered a gong before, but this thread... now I must have one.

It was either that or white rocks.

Finally someone takes this post where it should go.
