Or for something a little “sillier” David Walliams is a great choice - sort of a contemporary Roald Dahl, my girls LOVED Mr Stink and Midnight Gang.

My kids who are not voracious readers loved the Diary of a Wimpy Kid books.

EJ12, Girl Hero, an engaging, easy read book series from Usborne covers a school girl/secret agent who saves the world part time (with high interest topics like chocolate, friendship, bullies, animals, etc). It's the 1st chapter books my proficient, but previously not avid reader with heavy preference for graphic novels *voluntarily* devoured. She loves Calvin & Hobbes, Percy Jackson & Diary of a Wimpy Kid series.
