My kid was finished with the stroller between 2-3 (his choice, not ours, actually). He's nearing 6 now, he walks/runs/bikes whatever distance the rest of us are on foot. The stroller is for his baby sister now. |
Normal is whatever works for you. My son rode in one until he was about 8 because he wore a leg brace that you often couldn't see and people would look at me like was I crazy! He could walk but not long distances. Once the leg brace came off he became a little Forest Gump. |
I could see using it until 7 or 8 in NYC. My kids stopped using them in most situations around 3 or 4, but still used them in theme parks until probably age 7. |
Mine was also done by 2. Totally abnormal to have an older kid in a stroller like that. |
Depends on the kid and the lifestyle. Our youngest refused strollers starting at age 2. It was tough on us! Our other kids last until about age 4. We lived in the city and only had one car, so stroller use was huge. My commute got way too long when a kid didn’t want the stroller. |
I lived in Manhattan for 5 years and visit often I literally never saw an 8 year old in a stroller. That sounds completely absurd. It's harder to push an 8 year old in a stroller down a Manhattan street than it is to walk with. What neighborhood is that? Must be the UES ![]() |
I can only see using a stroller past 5-6 if you rarely walk places. Otherwise, by 4-5, the stroller gets to be more trouble than it's worth. I officially said goodbye to our stroller after I had to haul it upstairs to the preschool and it just was not worth it. |
I thought I remembered reading somewhere that the NYC subway system allows kids in strollers to ride for free--so a lot parents keep their kid in a stroller to avoid paying fare. |
I have a kid over six with a physical disability who sometimes uses a stroller. He has a power wheelchair, but sometimes if he's tired, or if we're some place with some terrain, he prefers a jogging stroller that's got more recline and a smoother ride. His disabilities are visible, but there are plenty of kids with milder versions of his disability who might use a stroller longer than average, so I'm definitely not a fan of shaming people for using strollers.
We also used our stroller longer than I thought we would. One of my kids is really good at sleeping anywhere, and sleeping through things like being picked up and moved. So, I'd put him the stroller and walk the dog for a couple hours while he napped, or I'd go to a neighbor's house for a party, put him to sleep when their kids fell asleep, and then use the stroller to get him home. He was probably pretty close to 5 the last time I did those things, and he's big for his age. I'll also say that I continued to use the double stroller even when I only had one stroller using kid. Initially, I was just too cheap to buy a new stroller when our old single died, but it also quickly became obvious that the empty stroller seat was a convenient place for the kids to throw their backpacks, or for me to carry a bunch of groceries home, or to hold the picnic when we went to the zoo. My oldest was probably out of a stroller by the time his younger sibling was 1, but I used that double for years after. |
I crossed a busy street to get my pre schoolers to school and damn straight my older one was strapped in too. I would just in case! At 2 you might have a scenario where you need safety above all else. |
Its fine, why do you have an issue with it. We always brought a stroller at 4-5-6 when we traveled or did a lot of walking. It was at least nice for stuff. |
This +1000. I was so excited for my kids to graduate from a stroller! Their reward for being able to walk was to go to Disney world. They were 3 and 6 and didn’t need the stroller. They were too excited to run around. When my youngest turned 6,we were able to ride our bikes all over the city (during quarantine, so lighter traffic downtown). We go for miles! Looking forward to travel abroad again when we can. Can’t wait to do Europe— they’ll have to be able to walk a lot and carry their own crap. |
No it's not. Show links from the last 2 times. |
