USC acceptance rate is 9% while UCLA/UCB are both around 35%. Michigan is at 45% so isn't really in the conversation.

Be an OOS applicant for Michigan, expect 45% acceptance rate, then come back here and let us know if you/your DC is offered admission. Same with UCLA/UCB. OTOH, you/your DC can cheat on standardized test, submit fake ECs, and can get into USC. USC is a joke!

I'd have disowned you.

LOL, yeah it was close, I think it would have been easier to tell them I was going to drop out, smoke meth and "walk the world like Caine from Kung Fu."

If you grew up out there then you know USC was the party school and not considered serious until only recently. I taught there and it was very much the University of Spoiled Children compared to east coast schools. And yes I went to school in the west and the east.

Sure thing all knowing one, thanks for disparaging my alma mater, I guess if it was bad when you taught there then you were part of the problem. As I said, my undergraduate education was UCLA and one of my graduate degrees was SC. It was also referred to as the University of South Central but hey you know a lot of schools get nicknames for stupid reasons. I too received another graduate degree from an east coast school, how is that relevant to this topic other than to be arrogant?
That's because it's so close to Watts.

Isn’t the Michigan OOS admission rate much lower than 45%?

NP. I agree. It is a completely unintelligent question. Best is subjective. Not being snarky, but are you from another country? Many immigrant families I know tend to view colleges very narrowly according to perceived prestige or name recognition internationally.

I don't know if Amercians are any different though. It's not wise to sterotype people

No UCB is around 18% for all applicants both instate and out of state.

A LOT of people do that, especially the rich and connected! Do you know why? Presitge and name recognition attracts winners. Winners get the gold (as in top jobs). Having them in your alumni network opens doors.. This kinda snowballs over time..

Immigrant families tend to pick up on things winners do because they think they are at least as good as the winners. Who else should they be modeling after? You?

PP misses the point but at least is unpleasant about it.

That is my point in my response above. Michigan, UCB, UCLA etc. are state-schools and the admission cut-offs, in terms of GPA and SAT/ACT scores, number of APs etc. and the acceptance rates are very different for in-state versus out of state applicants.

USC 11% https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=university+of+southern+california&s=all&id=123961
UCLA 12% https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=ucla&s=all&id=110662#admsns
UCB 16% https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=uc+berkeley&s=all&id=110635#admsns
UMich 23% https://nces.ed.gov/collegenavigator/?q=u+michigan&s=all&pg=2&id=170976#admsns

(I'm no fan of any of them, but it's better to be clear about data and where you are getting it...)

The data that matters is how kids from your school do when applying to these schools.

Impossible to give an answer to a stupid question. Best for introverted student? For student with LD? For pre-med? For classics? For getting research opportunities? For what exactly? And if OP is just the typical ranking whore than she's wasting everybody's time.

Emory has higher test scores than all the California schools sans Stanford. Georgetown has the highest test scores with Emory coming in second. USC is highly overrated. The only school in this group with a reputation score lower than 4.
Anonymous
Why would the lowest ranked school in the 20-25 range be considered the best in that range? Would that title go to UCLA or Emory. USC is tied for 24 there's a good chance that it won't be "tOp 25" next year or year after.
