OP, there was a thread on this in the lawn and garden section, you may find some good (and bad) ideas there:

Is there a specific type of trap that I need? If I go with sprinklers is one just in the general area going to work?

Also do I need to dig out some of the dirt and replace it?

Sprinklers will work but Hav-a-hart traps are the best. He needs to build a catio for them.

OP back.

Next day there was no crap.

That evening I was sitting on my front deck with a friend and saw them come out with cat on a leash. Cat was (obviously) skittish about this but I appreciated they were trying.

As they went to bring cat back in it got free and took off. Neighbor came to my yard but said it had gone into my other neighbors but let him know if I see it.

That day I had sprayed a bunch of deterrent and stuck a ton of twigs all over so it couldn't turn and dig. At 11:30pm cat saunters into my garage. I go look in backyard - sure enough fresh crap on top of the dirt on an actual plant now - so twigs worked but not exactly. Told neighbors next morning and they apologized and said they are trying. No crap since so fingers crossed.

Thanks everyone for all the tips!! I really did not want to deal with trapping it (legal here but have to ensure animal is not distressed and that it is fed/watered in the trap).

And I agree about the catio... and if it does start up again will likely go right to trapping.
