Big Fetus

Having had a big baby, OP, let me tell you in my incredibly biased opinion, they are unbelievably cute when born. Most of the weight goes to fat and helps start those delicious baby rolls.

Having had an 8lb 12 oz baby (on which the sonographer was right on), I would be thrilled if this next one is under 8 lbs - to me that doesn't sound like such a big baby.

OP's baby is 7lbs, 12oz at 37 weeks. So IF the sonogram sizing is correct, her baby will likely be bigger than yours at bith if she goes 40 weeks or more.

11:28 here - guess I should have specified, I had an 8lb 12 oz baby born at 37 weeks and the sonographer was right on (had a sonogram 4 days before delivery). Had I gone to 40 weeks plus he would have been over 10 lbs

I had a 9lb 1oz baby with no drugs...delivered vaginally on my back. It wasn't fun, but I survived.

OP, focus on the pros - you're baby will likely be pretty cute and sturdy. My husband said when he went in the nursery at the hostpital he could immediately spot our baby...lots of tiny, wrinkled babies and then our godzilla . And you might have a better shot that he/she will sleep well. Mine has always been a decent sleeper and I'm sure it's not totally related, but I always thought it's partially because his stomach was already a decent size when he was born.

I'm the PP who had a 10lb 8oz kiddo (vaginally, no drugs for me too! yes, it makes a hell of a story) -- and I agree with 18:54. I think this one is way more mellow, better sleeper, etc, than my first, smaller baby.

True, but it still sounds weird...

Uh yeah, my SIL was told her DD was 8 1/2 lbs at 38 weeks. she feared a 10 lb baby and let them "strip membranes". baby came 2 weeks early. just over 6 lbs. and she got a c/s.

i was due a week after her original due date. they told me just over 7 lbs. DD was 9 lb 4 oz.

you CANNOT trust these weight estimates. i feel like it should be illegal for them to give these weight estimates when they vary so much in accuracy, and yet so many decisions are made based on them.

ARGH.

36 weeks, Im scared I'll have a big baby again. first baby was 8.6 at 37 weeks and 5 days. Lots of tearing took two months to recover and finally go to the bathroom without bitting on a towel. Going to neonatologist to see how big he is this week. I'm 5'2" small frame. little hips. My mom is 5'7" big hips and had big babys no tearing, my younger brothers were 9.8 - 10 pounds. The oldest one is 6'4". I was 7.4 and im the smallest in my family. Everyone is different. If you cant handle big babys you just cant. If you can you are blessed.

I'm confused. Does it matter how much the baby weighs? I thought only head and shoulder size matter for delivery issues.

If you were able to birth your first baby, what makes you think you would be unable to do it again? Many first timers have lots of tearing. Usually second babies cause less tearing and are easier to push out, even if they are the same size or larger than the first.

Also, the neonatologist is not going to be able to tell you how big your baby is. He/She might have a guess, but there is simply no way they can know exactly.
