No based on data that my n of 2 happened to be consistent with. I’m sure your personal snowflake is a future Astronaut though. |
This has been my experience and everyone comments on how advanced my kids seem 🤷♀️ |
Maybe 5 or 6? English isn't her first language so the letters took longer to learn. |
It’s brilliant little gems like this that keep me reading DCUM. And tucked into such a potentially unbearable thread filled with bragging mothers. Thank you, PP!! |
Yes! Same. My 5 yo knew the basic shapes at 3 but forgot. He knows all his bike parts, though--can he apply to the contest? |
In defense of your 16yo, has she ever seen an aerial view? |
One of my kids would literally mess with our heads and still does. At age 2/3, we’d try to get him to count with us, but he’d be like 1, 2, 2, 2..... or we’d say 1, 2, what’s next? And he’d say 10! It was frustrating. Then one day when we were not paying attention, he literally counted from 1 to 20 by himself, and I was completely dumbfounded. For some reason he just really likes to mess with us. |
Also as another point of data, my other child learned the stuff at a really young age- as in she’d be able to identify most letters and shapes at 12 mos. she was obsessive- she’d point to every shape/letter to ask what it was. And if you asked her to point to a letter, she’d point to the correct one. She didn’t really start talking til age 2 though. I suspect she is on the spectrum. |
I think age 4 is when many kids can do most of those things |
It just depends if you’re one of those crazy parents who thinks these things matter. If you spend free time making them do flash cards and teaching this I would say most 2 to 3 year olds could memorize (because that’s what this is) these things. I just wait until it’s taught at school and has worked out more than fine. Some parents just want to post Instagram videos of their 2 year old doing letter flash cards but don’t realize this has no bearing on their intellect. 😂 |
I never waited until school to talk about colors, shapes, letters or numbers! I never used flash cards but just brought up things in normal narration and conversation. That said I have no clue how old my kids were when they knew it all. |
+1. Delightful! |
I did. We just do learning through play. |
Me again. We have a set of felt numbers and letters from Etsy and we play with them as if they're any other figurines. So we'll be like "Four is going for a ride in the school bus. Can he sit next to his friend B?" When its a physical toy to play with, its no different than her toy animals, people, play food. This is a tomato. This is a tiger. This is Seven. |
Mine did all that at 10 months. Extremely gifted stallion. But none of this matters 17 years from now when he’s applying for HYP |
