+1 OP, you don’t have to make a decision about ms/hs yet. |
Perhaps Banneker, what are you smoking? Banneker is far superior to Wilson. Look at the graduation rates, test scores, and college placement |
I dunno, I'm a lot more sanguine about EOTP school improvement over the next decade. For better or worse, Washington DC is currently one of the most rapidly gentrifying cities in the country. If OP chooses a NW EOTP neighborhood that is rapidly turning over to young, educated professionals with kids, but with the space she wants, like say 16th St. Heights--that might be a decent risk to take. You could also look at EOTP neighborhoods that are currently IB for Wilson, Mt. Pleasant and Shepherd Park. All of these neighborhoods will appreciate more than their WOTP counterparts. In 10 years, if things are still uncertain for high school, you could move, try for application schools, or go private, like many have done in these neighborhoods for decades. |
Also, OP what is your budget? You might get more targeted guidance if you provide a ballpark figure. |
It’s sat scores suck |
I don't know about that...we visited them and the faculty just underwhelmed me. If we didn't live in Wilson area - we'd be doing McKinley Tech. Most energetic and excited faculty. However....Wilson is doing very well in online distance learning so add that to your factors. |
Read the news. By the time OPs kids go to college there won’t be an SAT anymore. |
There is a point of view that the SAT is a racially biased test. |
| DC has been gentrifying since the 90s and the consensus on this board is that other than wilson (and maybe banneker), there are no other acceptable high schools in the city. I wouldn't expect much to change in 10 years. |
I have a kid at Wilson. It is so so, not that great but it crosses the acceptable line, just barely. The other comprehensive schools are just terrible. McKinley Tech is bad too. If I couldn’t do Wilson or Walls I would move out of DC. Banneker is probably fine too |
This! Wilson is okay. It is fine. But am I going to lengthen my commute and overinvest in housing, ten years in advance, to get a spot there that I could just as easily get before moving in the summer before 9th grade? No way. We will at least try our hand at lotterying into Latin. |
| People have been saying forever that schools will improve in 10 years. They never do. DCPS is a huge problem. Leadership is mostly incompetent. Most of the high school principals are pretty terrible including Wilson |
Agree with this and after many more than 10 years of being told "you never know what can change in 10 years." The change might be more schools like Latin or DCI, which provide more options but don't lead to some rising tide lifting the neighborhood schools. |
Kids grow up faster than schools improve! |
An excuse-making, incorrect one. But that is a different thread. |
