Masks would become ineffective in a daycare due to how often babies and toddler would be touching them.

Would this matter for kids development? If they can’t see facial expressions? Does anyone have any thoughts? I truly wonder about this, because I want my kid to see her teacher. This might be the reason I keep her home. I want her to get hugs and smiles and those sorts of things.

My daughter is in preschool, as we are essential workers. Everyone entering the school (teachers and kids) have to get a temp check before they can go in. Parents can’t enter the building.

The teachers do not wear masks. They give hugs to the kids, smiles, etc. It’s really important for kids’ verbal development to see mouths moving. Also, having their teachers not be able to touch them at all—no hugs, diaper changes, etc.—is both impractical and harmful to their development.

There have been no cases in her center.

Everyone should be masked. I’m reporting you to the health officials

? I didn’t even identify the school.

I have been saying this the whole time. There will be less spots and they will be more expensive.

They’ve had no cases and have been open the entire time.

The proof is in the pudding!

I did not think there was a requirement for staff to wear masks.

There is no requirement for staff to wear masks, at least for now. It is recommended, but not mandatory. I am a preschool teacher who works in a center in va that has remained open the whole time to serve children of essential workers. We are at a greatly reduced capacity, with many new safety measures being taken, temp checks, no parents in the building, LOTS of extra cleaning and sanitizing, etc but we are not required to mask up. So far only one staff member has felt the need to wear a mask. I have a mask just in case but so far have not worn it. The kids can’t wear masks, it’s just not practical, so it seems pointless for me to wear a mask when they are closer to each other than they are to me (and social distancing for little kids is IMPOSSIBLE for anyone wondering, we’ve tried to explain it and implement it but they are just too young to understand and remember to keep distance)
Staff that are working in the baby classrooms don’t wear masks either.

Right — what’s the point of putting on a mask when you’re literally changing kids’ diapers and wiping their faces and butts all day?

Are children allowed to play together?

There's no way to significantly eliminate the risks when kids start going back to daycares / schools. Here's an article explaining how the disease spreads indoors. Masks on teachers won't help. I'm not saying centers shouldn't reopen - but parents will have to decide if they're going to assume the risk or come up with another option.
