Are center based daycares still going to pay their teachers?

I don’t think that is correct. Non-profits aren’t required to pay unemployment taxes, but if they don’t, they must provide payment for actual claims by their workers. Either way, an employee of a non-profit remain covered.

There may be slightly different rules for employees of religious institutions, but that could be defined narrowly and might not cover a daycare worker, even at a church based center.

I know for a fact that an employee who was terminated within the past 6 months was told after attempting to file for unemployment that they are not eligible because of the non profit status.

Unemployment only provides 50-75% of income. You’re talking about people who are already living paycheck to paycheck. In all reality, they could end up homeless.

A center would be extremely lucky if it could get 50% of families to pay tuition for months while the center is closed. Most will either have to pay for other care or have been laid off themselves.
