Why would the OP, put her child at Kimball to be the only white or mixed race child at the school? OP, don’t do this foolish suggestion,

Where does it say OP is white?

Maybe because of its impressive performance and proximity to OP's area?

+1. We ranked Kimball high a few years ago, because we were very impressed. The earlier PP is just a stupid racist. However, OP likely lives in River Terrace or Mayfair and commutes WOTR. They should really focus on schools WOTR for convenience. Browne?

If you have space on your list, put Payne just in case, but I think it may be tougher this year. I know of many more siblings on their way in this fall vs. last year, and a few proximity preference siblings as well. But every year is different so the list may move this year enough for more OOB.

Not accurate. They took OOB off the WL.

I was coming here to say this. Both schools took OOB kids off the WL, as did Tyler, which you might also consider. Only Brent, Maury, LT and Peabody are entirely/definitely wasted spots on the Hill.

Houston (Spanish immersion)
Nalle (has Montessori)

Both EOTR and fairly close to you, with decent OOB possibilities. I've been to Thomas and wouldn't hesitate to send a kid there, though I would probably rank other schools above it.

If you're planning to move anyway I would list Stevens since it is near work. You'd have that continuity in your commute no matter what neighborhood you moved to. And it's city-wide so you have a chance of getting in.

We have a 3 year old who would enter PK3 in the fall and we're debating if it's even worth entering the lottery vs. sending him to daycare for another year. Our house, bought years ago when we were young and stupid, is EOTR and initially that's where we'll be. Our in-bounds option is.....not good. So, I need some help pulling together a list if we decide to do the lottery. Obviously I've missed the open houses, which is making this even more challenging. And I'm not sure how to find data on detailed breakdowns like OOB offers made, etc., just the basic info.

This is what I have so far:
Two Rivers Young (we like the school from what we know about it and the location is incredibly convenient for us. I know it's a longshot)
Two Rivers 4th
Capitol Hill Montessori
Payne
Miner
JO Wilson
Appletree Southwest

Where else? I don't want to waste spots. I know Van Ness, L-T, Muary, Brent are absolute no-gos as far as getting in. Even Amidon-Bowen seems impossible to get into! (which blows my mind after living in SW from 2006-2011). We'll be commuting across the Hill to get to downtown and Foggy Bottom/GW area. Thomson? Stevens?

In an ideal world, wed land at a school that is play-based. I know, that's not how a lot of DC schools are. We're not looking for language immersion (DH and I are fluent in German and Russian, neither of which are offered). And we want to keep the commute down, bonus if we can not have to use a car.

Just chiming in to point out that all DCPS preKs are play-based. I think most of the charters are too actually. The only program that I believe is less play-based is AppleTree, but I hear people are happy there too, so maybe it's play-based in practice if not in name. Anyway, good luck!

Are either options anywhere close to you? Capitol Hill Montessori is still up near Columbia Heights for another year, so likely too far out of the way given your commute.

OP here. Thanks for the SWS rec. I was under the mistaken impression that the swing space hadn't been settled yet, but Carver Langston is convenient for us. We'll be crossing the river on Benning Road.

And, ugh, commuting to Columbia Heights is not ideal. Thanks for the heads up.

Consider adding JO Wilson (they sometimes have OOB movement in summer)
Consider adding your IB school. You can visit and decide not to enroll if you hate it. But DC generally does pretty well at the prek level even if upper grades are not great.

Also adding consider Capitol Hill Montessori - swing space doesn't look too bad a commute from work and kid would be back in pre-K4 the next year. something to think about.

PP - sorry I totally missed the first time around that you have them on your list!

When you say "many more siblings" do you mean IB siblings?

Yes, I was referring to more IB siblings. Payne is a pretty small school with only 2 classes/per grade (besides PreK3 that has three) so the number of siblings varies year to year. Last year's PK3 class only had a couple of IB siblings, but I know of several kids each in Kinder, PreK4, 1st and 2nd who have siblings coming in next year.
With the strange shape of the Payne/Peabody boundary we have kids with proximity preference as well. There were some siblings that got in with proximity preference this year for PreK3, so they must have moved through the whole PreK3 list this year.

Thanks - I am IB Payne and worried about our chances with so many siblings.
