4 years for language?

Anonymous
My DS is in AP Spanish lang this year - he is definitely conversational and he puts that on his resume. It is likely to be truly useful to him and he hopes to continue spanish in college next year.

If your kid has a STEM major or other focus, then it's probably fine to stop if it clears up space for more advanced classes in another field.

Probably not OK for more electives or a free period if you are aiming for top 50.

That's 90% of this forum. People sharing opinions. We can't expect everyone to have spreadsheets and reports for every post.

My kid took 5 years of Spanish; almost all As. Can barely speak or understand it. No way most of the kids coming out of the language track in MCPS would know it well enough to put it on a resume.

This is so true. I was the same, French from 7th through 11th grades. I came out of it with maybe the ability to order a hot chocolate in a McDonald's in Quebec.

It's me for Spanish! I took Spanish 8th-12th grades. I say "Hello" to someone, ask them how they are doing and say I'm doing very well. I really hate this focus on 2 years vs 4 years in high school. It's pointless. The majority of the kids won't become fluent by taking 4 years in High School.
