Colleges have begun bringing exchange students home from China

I would think travel insurance might cover or airlines could waive fees to change from later flights.

I know a college student being brought back early from their study abroad program. They got a flight on United and got a half-off ticket after explaining their situation to the people at United.

But most people buy their return ticket months in advance and can’t shell out $1-2k for another with almost no notice. Again, for my daughter, it was prohibitive at ~$1300.

1300 is not prohibitive. Put it on a credit card. It is a question of life and death...

This is NOT likely a matter of life or death! the fatality rate is about 4-5%, not much more than regular flu. the hysteria is beyond control

while I agree there's a lot of hysteria, you're not helping. nobody knows the actual fatality rate, and 4-5% is actually very, very high, much higher than flu currently.

Nice.

Most travel insurance policies would not cover cancelation for this reason (unless the person traveling got sick overseas).

Dont most colleges that sponsor programs have mandatory trip insurance ? I think it was for emergencies related to the progrAm. When kid’s luggage was lost there was no help, as tickets were purchased individually. But it probably covered emergency evacuation and the health frog says: don’t go, so hopefully that counts?

British Airways just stopped all flights today and most airlines will probably follow suit. You really want your college-age kid stranded in an authoritarian country during a pandemic?

And US State dept citizens are being evacuated. DD was at JFK today: hundreds of Chinese disembarked there today in a long line.

Why should the college foot the bill to get your kid out of a potentially dangerous situation? They aren’t responsible for what is transpiring.

Because it's bad press for the college if Larla from Generic U dies during study abroad because she can't afford an emergency ticket home.
