That weird thing is a census-designated place; that's why it's on Google Maps. https://www.census.gov/quickfacts/southkensingtoncdpmaryland |
I grew up in Kensington in the 80s. It wasn't good then either. |
Neither were a lot of the other schools like BCC and Richard Montgomery. MCPS had a great reputation early on and for some reason hung on to it. It was pretty bad in the 80's and 90's. The only difference was at least we had textbooks to supplement for the lack of teaching. |
Never heard of it either. People are making up terms to segregate the populations. Never heard of North Bethesda and North Potomac till the past 10 years. You are either in the town of Kensington or not. |
There are multiple subdivisions but that doesn't describe all of that section of Kensington. |
Except the town of Kensington is really small. Where do the people who don't live in the Town live? Their postal address is Kensington. They don't live in any other town. I guess you could say your neighborhood, but no one from more than 5 miles away would know where that is. If you said you lived in Parkwood or Byeforde no one from 90% of the County would have any idea where you live. It would be meaningless. I sometimes tell people I am from an unincorporated part of Montgomery County often referred to as Kensington, but that's a mouthful and I really only do it when I'm trying to make a point about how much of "Kensington" is NOT in the Town of Kensington. |
My house is in Chevy Chase off of Jones Bridge Road (20815) and my kids went to Rosemary Hills and then North Chevy Chase Elementary. I will never, ever understand the logic of sending our kids to Silver Spring forthe first three years, especially since RH is much farther away than what an elementary school SHOULD be from a child’s home. Who was the genius that thought up that?? |
I’m confused, are you not aware that it’s a very well known desegregation program from the 1970s? Is that what you’re joking about when you ask what genius thought it up? I guess the same ones who were against “separate but equal.” https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/local/1997/11/23/celebrating-an-enduring-integration/9448ea2d-7a9c-45ed-bec5-87b1f784fb1a/ |
Google is your friend. |
Don't be harsh. PP was just completely clueless. I hope. |
Considering I just moved to this area 3 years ago, I didn’t know the entire history. But way to jump to conclusions... thanks for being so informative. |

My child is in the Rosemary Hills/Chevy Chase feeder pattern, and I like it. Don't get me wrong--we live right by CCES and would love to be able to walk to school for six years, rather than split between the two--but I think the tradeoff for having a much more diverse school is worth it. In my child's class, there is no majority race/ethnicity, lots of languages spoken, many cultures represented. If everyone just went to their closest school, all 3 schools (RHES, NCC, and CCES) would be a lot less diverse because of housing segregation. So, overall, for me the tradeoff is worth it.
Good luck OP! If you have questrions about RHES, I'm happy to answer them. |
So for 3 entire years you wondered, as you did, why your kid is going to RH/Silver Spring and didn’t ask? Or do a little research? OK. |
| The part of Silver Spring, near Chevy Chase was very different. |
Wow, you really are a miserable human being aren’t you? |
