While there are some exceptional kids in MCPS, Maryland has no equivalent to TJ nor does it have anywhere near the same number of high performing students. |
Sure it does, just more are at base schools than in VA. |
LOL. MD has more high performing students than VA, that's why MD, even though it's smaller, outperforms VA in almost every academic competitions. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Regeneron_Science_Talent_Search https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/It%27s_Academic |

Good point - OP, you said "Maryland" but you should be asking about your specific county. |
Poolesville might be the closest because it is a whole school magnet, with three main magnet programs and interdisciplinary access throughout. The SMACS program there is just one of them. As a result, the school has an overall large proportion of high achieving students. Definitely different than TJ, but has that whole-school feel.
The middle school SMACS magnet program for the upcounty is within Clemente MS and has an excellent reputation. |
MCPS has more magnet options. There's Blair and Poolesville, for one. I like how kids can access non-STEM magnet programs (at least at Poolesville), as it provides a wider array of options than just the STEM programs. |
HoCo does not have magnets. Baltimore City has Poly (science) and Western (humanities). |
100 per class at Blair? So about a quarter of TJ size. Probably all of them go to top 10 colleges as it sounds like a quarter of TJ kids go to top 10 ? |
1/4 of TJ grads go to top ten???? lOL!!!!! |
If you consider UVA as a top 10 school, then it's true. |
Nope. For 2019: Harvard 5 Yale 4 Princeton 4 Stanford 3 MIT 7 Chicago 8 Duke 4 UVA 37 Add 2 "top 10" schools, still less than 1/4 of TJ grads. |
Are the numbers how many were admitted to each school? Or how many are actually going there? If the former, then it's likely only about 5-10 kids who got in most of the above schools. In any case, I think Blair definitely has TJ beat given that it's 1/4 the size. |
Blair sends many to University of MD. |
Because it has very strong tech/science programs and offer most Blair kids merit aid in addition to being instate. I can speak from experience it is a difficult choice between a auper selective super expensive private school and a strong state school which costs about 80% less after merit aid. |
