DCC lottery

I don't know who posted about getting in for merit for music, but that is exactly where we are at. DC REALLY wants to study music at Blair. It has the best music program in the DCC (and I'm sure it is ranked very high in the whole county). According to DC's MS music teacher, Northwood has the worst music program because they cut the music teacher position to less than full time and we heard that teacher quit. Northwood has a music academy which we thought would be a good second choice but apparently it is not. Why is there no application program for Blair music?? Or any county music program? :-/

NP here, and with a MS-aged child so no skin in this particular game yet.

MCPS has considered an audition-based performing arts school, but it is unclear whether they are going to move foward on it at this point. It was one of the options on the table for Woodward, but the architectural plans that have been made public don't seem to suggest they are rehabbing that space with the goal of performing arts and practice spaces.

In your position, maybe the way forward is to do the second round application, but also look at some non-school options for music. Both DC Youth Orchestra and College Park Youth Orchestra have amazing programs, and if your child is really quite talented, they can audition for one of the more competitive groups.

Thanks for your suggestions about outside music programs! I’ll look into them.

Blair is good but not the best. Move.

Einstein’s band and jazz band teacher, Mr Kelly, is amazing! He’s won some award, and had completely invigorated the music scene at Einstein since he started a few years ago. Two jazz band classes (lab and ensemble), a growing marching band (from 6 kids to 30+). Plus now the band kids show up to play at home basketball games. He’s really a great teacher and every kid I know who is into music at Einstein (and their parents) are super pumped about him. Look at Einstein!

Yes, Einstein is the best choice for a performer. The new principal seems to love the arts scene there, let’s see what she does with it.

Wheaton is quickly rising in popularity. We still have our fingers crossed for the two application programs there.

Don't tell them that. Let them think its a terrible program so it keeps numbers down and class sizes reasonable. Really, its a terrible program and Blair is much better.

Exactly! My 2 kids are there now and loving it. i mean, no, no , it's umm, terrible...

Don't overcrowd Einstein. My 3rd still needs to lottery in, next year.

If you already have a kid(s) at an out of bounds DCC HS, I thought your younger kid(s) automatically got in too so long as older kid was still attending? And yes, Einstein is TERRIBLE! (wink)

Why not just move, there are plenty cheap homes in all of the DCC zones. That is why all the poor people live on that side of the city

That's correct. The older sibling still needs to attend the year the younger sibling begins.
