+1. Human immune systems don't just spring to life all by themselves. Your baby has an immune system that needs to learn to cope with every pathogen that is out there. It happens as they are exposed to them. Yes, they are exposed to far more in a shared childcare setting, but they have to be exposed to them. If you shield your child with a nanny, then when they enter pre-school or school (whether public or private) they will be exposed to the wide variety of germs and pathogens that are out there. And you can't even tell sometimes when a child has one. Some of your child's school friends may be carriers. Your child will also be exposed in public when you go to a mall, to a library, to a children's play place, to an airport, etc. Just be aware that whenever you start to expose your child to the public (both adults and children), they will start to be exposed to all sorts of things that will make them sick. As their immune system learns, they will be affected by fewer of them. So you can expose them now or later. Your choice. |
That only delays the inevitable. If you hire a nanny and they stay healthier younger, then when they start pre-school or grade school, they will be exposed and will be sick more then. |
Buys OP some time to relax and lower her standards ![]() |
With her gallon baggie of toys. |
our daycare washes/bleaches the toys every day.
kids in daycare get sick no matter what. |
Daycares disinfecr toys daily. It is realistic. |
Disinfect |
At my daycare I sanitize toys during naptime and at the end of the day. There is no way I can keep track of every single toy for every single child has touched between each use. Also, when you start bringing in toys from home there is the issue of sharing and kids getting upset because somebody has their toy. Even little babies will snatch toys out of other babies hands. The key is handwashing, even babies hands, and that is something that I practice every day and I run a very healthy daycare. |
Your expectations are totally off base. You want the daycare teachers to be watching your baby, not washing toys and/or keeping their eyes trained on toys all day long rather than the children. Daycare has been great for my 3 kids but I agree that you should get a nanny. |
Agreed. But a 2 year old or 3 year old sick is not the same as a 5 month old. It's why we decided on a nanny and the oldest kid had 2 colds before going to preschool at 3. The youngest of course has had 2 colds in 4 months since her oldest brings stuff home now. |
+1 OP your plan is not realistic. The way babies play is by putting things in their mouth. And as soon as they are mobile, they add on taking things out of other kids' hands. That's literally all they do. Your "Larlo only" ziplock bag can't change that. I'm sorry your little guy is having such a rough adjustment. Every time we got over a cold we'd tell ourselves "now the immune system is that much stronger." |
Better the baby get sick now than when he's in elementary school and has to miss days of instruction. |
Think about a nanny, and eventually putting into part time day care with nanny pickup. That way DC will be older, still get sick but you won't have to constantly take off work. |
Op I totally feel your frustration it’s so hard to see your baby sick not to mention exhausting. We did move my son to a small home daycare at 6 months from a center (we plain couldn’t afford a nanny or nanny share) because he was definitely the kid people are talking about that caught everything. He still gets sick but they have been so much less serious illnesses and less often. Not to mention he was barely napping at the center because he didn’t do well with the napping in one room. Just wanted to provide another option if nanny won’t work and you find it really won’t work for you. Home daycare was at least less kids and germs |
They really can't do anything. Kids will grab toys from each other and shove them in their mouths. Keeping toys separate would be impossible, kids don't have a sense of mine and yours at that age. To be honest kids grab each others hands all the time anyway, so I don't think it'd make a difference. |
