People who know what a cookie exchange is will show a little respect for other participants’ time and effort. A social gathering is just that. A cookie exchange is about cookies, but includes socializing.

Disagree. That’s what people like the caramel corn poster think but it’s not. I do not sign up to participate in these because it’s common knowledge you’re signing up to bring a lot of a special cookie and I’m not going to commit to that kind of baking. Those that are sign up believing everyone else is on the same wavelength, not handing off Oreos drizzled in white chocolate

Some of you all are so ungracious! We have a neighborhood cookie exchange and it includes home bakers of varying skill levels. The point is to come together during the holidays for warmth and companionship. I wouldn’t mind a chocolate cookie or Rice Krispies treats at all. Variety is great! When there are going to be twenty people at Christmas, someone is going to want a simple chocolate chip cookie. Someone is going to want rice krispies treats. It’s great to be able to offer variety without having to make every different type. I hate the idea of a judge competitive show-off cookie exchange.

I think there may be a difference between a small cookie exchange among people who actually bake vs. a neighborhood or workplace cookie exchange. When you’re casting the net of invitees that wide, it’s not really about the cookies. Just know which kind of cookie exchange you’re attending.

So you are having a casual neighborhood potluck. That is not a cookie exchange party which does have a level of competition in it! I don’t know how you guys don’t understand the difference. One is casual and you can bring whatever. The other is not intended to be a hangout with random snacks and cookies - the WHOLE POINT is the cookies.

Yes. They were very common where I grew up in the Midwest. A friend here who is a DC native takes part in one with her family that's apparently been happening for 20yrs.
