DD#1 is a junior at University of Wisconsin; I feel like they were much closer ranked a few years ago when she was applying.

I’m surprised that UW hasn’t dropped after all those years of governor Walker. I know that budgets have been tight and programs cut, since I have friends on faculty there.

No, they just moved up. And Minnesota was never ranked anywhere near Wisconsin. Most of the kids in Minnesota would rather go to Wisconsin.

PP here, I should correct myself. I meant that seemed like a low rank (high number) for Minnesota. I would expect UMN to be in the 50s. DD visited both Minnesota and Wisconsin, the campus vibe and town of Madison were way better.

Maybe Wisconsin has weathered the Walker storm, DD hasnt felt any ill effects (locked out of classes, etc) and they are building a bunch on campus. She doesnt mind the cold but it took some getting used to in that she had to buy the right clothes/layers. She says she likes having dramatically different seasons.

You and DD made a great choice! On Wisconsin!

I was just going to say the same thing. Definitely look into Michigan State.

and make sure you understand the Michigan State sexual abuse scandal that they hide for years. They are not getting a penny from us.

I attended there. It's not a commuter school in the sense of UMBC. There is a huge and lovely central campus. But students live on campus, in adjacent neighborhoods and throughout the metro area. It is a campus in the center of a 3.6 million population metro area. It is not like U of Mich., Wisc., UVA or any other college/university town. Back in my day the Minnesota kids that went to Madison went because it was "MadTown" not because it was perceived to be any better. It's an urban university where you can be in a city center in a few minutes from campus. Usually it turns out it is the fear of cold that limits more from coming to the Twin Cities - whether for school or work.

Visit. It matters. No student from our high school ever got in, until one student visited. They got in. This observation is a decade old, but I think it's worth finding a way to express interest. We did not see that necessary with similar midwest, flagship Us

It’s so subjective when talking about campus vibe. And not everyone prefers to be at Madison. Husband is a Badger and loved it. I took one look at Madison and wanted to leave. I wanted a bigger city and wasn’t into Big Ten sports. Camp Randall dominates at Wisconsin. I love the lakes and the terrace there, but the 60s architecture isn’t my fave. U of M’s campus’s has prettier buildings, a great mall with views of downtown Minneapolis and the Mississippi. For me, U of M was the perfect fit. I agree UW Madison is higher up the list on academic rankings, but I got a full scholarship for my senior year in the Netherlands and got into Harvard for grad, so Minnesota gave me a great foundation.

Not true on would rather. It is the case that among those who get into both, most prefer Madison, but there are a whole slew who only applied to one or the other.

We don't need to slam either school for not being the other school. They are similar in many ways but they are run quite differently.

My DS and I visited two years ago - we both really liked it and he applied (he's attending elsewhere). Gorgeous campus, great facilities, everyone we met was super nice. I actually liked UM better than UWisc-Madison, which we also visited. I would have been very happy if he had attended. It's close to a great city but still has a campus feel.

I suspect it will be gaining in popularity in the DMV area as school admissions increasingly tighten.

Having said that - agree with other PPs, it is pretty darn white.

I’m well aware, but campus life doesn’t revolve around Big Ten sports nearly to the degree that it does in Madison.

I doubt you knew this, actually, but if you say so. I’ve never heard a human being say that Madison revolves around Big Ten sports.

Well my DH who was in the marching band it for starters. And most of his friends. And it’s not a bad thing whatsoever. They loved it and had an amazing undergrad experience. It just wasn’t what I was looking for. It’s the same reason I didn’t go to my flagship UGA. Was just in Madison for the Michigan game. Total blast, but the city comes to a standstill and it’s a sea of red and white. Did you go to Wisconsin? You can certainly have a different opinion but I’m not alone.

Of course UMN is in the Big Ten. But you can't tell me that the TFC Bank stadium (seats 51k) dominates like Camp Randall (seats 80k). It doesn't. Ski U Mah, y'all.

I'm with ya. You can have a great time in Madison without caring much about sports, but you can't avoid them, either. When 80k people leave a stadium in a town of only a few hundred thousand, it dominates.

Yeah this person claiming they’ve never heard that Wisconsin and Big Ten sports are a thing has clearly never set foot in the state of Wisconsin. Obtuse comment of the thread .
