Bed bugs in my hotel room...HELP!!

Anonymous
Which hotel OP? A few people have asked.

Throw everything out. Go to Macy's, dress your family with stacked coupons on sale items and leave what you're wearing in a trashcan.

Just put them in a big trash bag for 48 hours.

Given that I had to throw away a loft bed and dresser to get rid of bedbugs, it seems like a small price to pay.

Asking the same question others have asked...what hotel, OP?

this is so gross and cheap

Why? This is a common tip.

2. Order this and have it 1 day Prime delivered to your house. I have this thing, it works. There are multiple sizes, get one that fits your stroller or largest suitcase. Ask Disney to reimburse: ZappBug Heater https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00F6EV306/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_GFhjDbCPN653H

3. When checking bags, tell the airline. They will seal your luggage in plastic. This is to prevent spread of bed bugs to other airline passengers’ luggage. Please be thoughtful of other people.

4. Do not bring ANY luggage in the house. Setup BugZapp in the garage or patio, you’ll heat treat all your bags and belongings. No shoes into the house, you’ll heat zap those too. All belongings from the trip should be placed in plastic garbage bags outside as soon as you get home. You want to prevent any hitchhiking bug from escaping.

5. The clothing you wear on the plane? Strip down as soon as you get in the house. Hot wash then into the dryer. You and DH should physically check each other to ensure there are no bugs in your hair.

6. Heat zap everything. It will probably take a full day to do all your luggage, shoes, bags, etc. Give the machine the proper time to warm up every item to 120 degrees for at least 20 minutes.

this is great advice. just went through this when i was 41 weeks pregnant-- what you need to be concerned about eradicating is not just the bugs-- but the EGGS. the eggs need to be heated to at least 120 degrees for 20 minutes. Washing will not necessarily kill them, but heating in the dryer will. You should also consider a therapist when you are back (i'm not kidding). I really have anxiety about a return infestation and am ALWAYS thinking any piece of lint in my house is another bug, ready to ruin my life again.

I'm so sorry you are going through this, but really hopeful that you don't bring any home.
You’ll be fine, OP. You are so lucky that you caught it now. If you are diligent and follow the steps, you’ll survive this.

In terms of compensation, I think Disney should refund you the full cost of your stay. They probably won’t give you anything for your flight. You may be able to make a travel insurance claim with your credit card company- read the fine print carefully.

Good luck.

I would just ditch the luggage. It’s a lot cheaper than big treatment.

An exterminator once recommended that you store your luggage in the bathtub in a hotel. The bedbugs cannot climb easily enough to get in there. Same when you get home. For anything that can’t be stored outside while you deal with it (electronics for example), throw it in the bathtub. You’ll be able to see the bugs if there are any in there and can then decide when you feel comfortable taking items out and returning to regular use.

I don't know if they offer the service in your area, but when my son's private school discovered bed bugs at their retreat camp after they washed everything they hired a company with bloodhounds (I think that was the breed) to walk through the bus with all the stuff on it to confirm everything was clean. This was a couple years ago and I never heard about anyone being infested later.

It’s also really bad advice. It has such a huge margin for error. There’s probably going to be a little bit of moisture in the car and not a consistent temperature. Bedbugs need high heat and zero humidity for an extended period of time to dehydrate. Putting everything in your car on a hot day is a good way to infest your car with bedbugs.

Honestly I would throw everything out. Get a new purse as well.

Either fork over the name of the hotel, or it DIDN'T HAPPEN and you are a troll.

I had something similar happen when I went to Disney world. Ugh. We also caught it at the hotel. Hotel heat zapped everything and we then went to a new hotel where we washed and dried everything. We came home and I again washed everything and dried it again. Whatever we couldntbwash I put in a small plastic bag and heated it up with a. Hair dryer and checked the temp with a meat thermometer. Our suitcases are still wrapped in plastic in our garage. I have so much anxiety over those things and all I can think of is how thankful I am that I insisted we pack as lightly as possible for that trip. We were really lucky that we caught it early.
