Do you let your kids wear whatever they want to birthday parties? Tutus and costumes etc...

No costumes at birthday parties unless specifically requested by the host.

Tutus have become integrated into normal girl clothes - they make casual dresses with tutu underlay or overlay, and have really downgraded tulle to a normal, everyday kind of fabric.

I think it’s rude to upstage the birthday boy/girl with a costume (if it’s not a costume party.)

If it's a themed party (like a tea party) I'll let DD dress up, but if it's a normal party, I won't let her so she doesn't distract from the birthday girl/boy.

No way. So inappropriate. Birthday kid should be the star. Tell your child no.

I think if a kidi is having a party that is not a costume party, and one guest shows up in a full Iron Man costume, that is going to make them the center of attention and is maybe not kind to the birthday child. I would discourage it for that reason. But, that said, if you have a child that is extremely rigid, and won't go out unless he's in his Iron Man costume, I would be understanding.

I don't think a tutu, or something like that, falls into the same category as a full costume. Same with kids that want to wear PJs to a party. NBD.

I agree. I think it's sort of tacky.

I don't. But then my kid is little and I have some say in it. Everyone picks their hill. For me it's being appropriately and seasonally dressed and groomed. I don't go crazy with very fancy outfits everywhere but everything kind of matches (because I purchase things that generally all go together) and doesn't have holes or stains and is the right weight fabric for the season. I don't let my kid wear rain boots to the playground if it's 90 degrees out and she's going to climb all over it either.
