How can non-travel team High School players improve

I've encountered multiple sites which say they have summer lacrosse camps for 5th-12th grade only to find that the 9th-12th offerings are only invitation-only/travel team only. How is my kid who just started lacrosse at Wheaton going to get better if there are no local places for him. We can't afford the sleep-away lacrosse camps. This is very biased. Please tell me there are other options out there.

What are you and your child trying to get out of lacrosse? Are you hoping for a college scholarship, or just want him to learn the game, and have fun and play on a team during high school?

If you are hoping for a scholarship, unless your kid is an amazing athlete, who is uniquely dedicated to the sport, it's likely too late for that. So don't listen to these people talk about private lessons and all manner of expensive nonsense.

What you can do is find local clinics, watch youtube videos and drills on USA Lacrosse's website, and play lots of wall ball. TONS of wall ball, and practice stick tricks. Not for the sake of the silly tricks, but because it'll increase familiarity with the stick in various positions.

Basketball defensive footwork drills translate almost 100% to lacrosse man to man defense. So you can also look into having him play basketball in the offseason.
