Were your High-performing Child(ren) Bored in Class??? Pleae share your insight

My experience in this is that it all depends on how rigid the teacher is. Some teachers let kids read whatever books they want, let the kids use their free time to explore whatever interests them, and try to challenge kids who are ahead. Others make the kid rigidly stick to the program and will give busywork to the children who finish their classwork quickly.

My kid loved K, liked 1st, was a bit bored in 2nd but still loved the reading and math teachers, and liked AAP 3rd but found the math teacher boring. All of the boring teachers were the ones with very rigid agendas and the ones who overly relied on Dreambox or other technology.

OP, my DD is just finishing kindergarten in APS. There is tons of freedom for your child to challenge herself. The writing units ask the kids to write a story about themselves or to write a how to book. It can be as hard or as easy as your child wants. During reading time, they read books at their individual level. During science, they write down observations at their level. During art, they can interpret the prompt as creatively as they choose. Your child will find her own level.

My son was bored and hasn't learned anything new academically from k-2.

The result is because he "knows it already" he refuses to waste his time doing busywork for things he already knows.

Teachers are willing to give him extra work to do if he completes all his classwork.

Report cards are 4's on academic knowledge but 2's on effort.

The kid taught himself to read at age 2.5, got a 160 score on NNAT and CogAT, taught himself programming, speaks 3 languages fluently, and is top ranked in math kangaroo.

We need to take him out of public school because FCPS is not setup for him. Montessori was a better education so far.
